>> I'D LIKE TO CALL TO ORDER THE BUSINESS MEETING OF

[1. Call to Order - 7:30 p.m.]

THE PELHAM BOARD OF EDUCATION OF SEPTEMBER 13TH, 2023.

PLEASE STAND FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

>>

>> I THINK WE HAVE A LOT OF IMPORTANT UPDATES TO HEAR ABOUT THE OPENING OF SCHOOL, SO IN WAY OF OPENING REMARKS JUST VERY GRATEFUL TO EVERYBODY WHO WORKED SO HARD OVER THE SUMMER OF OUR TEACHERS AND CUSTODIAL STAFF AND THE BUSINESS OFFICE, EVERYBODY WHO WAS PUTTING IN SO MUCH WORK TO GET THE SCHOOLS READY AND WISH EVERYBODY A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2023/24 SCHOOL YEAR, I CAN'T BELIEVE SUMMER WENT BY SO FAST.

THANK YOU TO NATALIE AND JACKIE WITH THE MEETING LAST TIME AND FOR EVERYBODY WHO SHOWED UP AND WE HAD A QUORUM, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I DID WANT TO SUGGEST THAT WE MOVE FORWARD COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC.

[4. Communications and Comments from the Public]

IF WE HAVE ANY MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC THAT WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK, YOU CAN COME FORWARD AND JUST STATE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS AND WE'D BE HAPPY TO LISTEN TO YOUR COMMENT.

JUST TO THE MICROPHONE.

>> HI. MY NAME IS TINA CASPER.

I LIVE AT 10 ELM TREE LANE IN PELHAM MANOR.

I WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK THIS EVENING AND TO SPEAK EARLIER THAN USUAL, THANK YOU.

I LIVE WITH MY HUSBAND JOHN IN A NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THE KIDS LIKE TO CONGREGATE AT NIGHT.

IN PELHAM MANOR THERE'S A LONG HISTORY OF TEENS GETTING TOGETHER AT NIGHT IN THE WOODS, THE GOLF COURSES, THE RAILROAD TRACKS.

I DON'T WANT TO PRESUME TO SPEAK FOR MY NEIGHBORS, BUT FOR YEARS WE'VE ALL DEALT WITH KIDS TRESPASSING, LITTERING, UNDERAGE DRINKING, PUBLIC URINATION, LOUD NOISE, AND VANDALISM.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT THE KIDS LITERALLY RUN SOMETIMES ON MASS THROUGH BACKYARDS TO GET TO THEIR RENDEZVOUS POINT FOR THE NIGHT.

BUT SOMETHING HAPPENED ON SATURDAY NIGHT BEFORE LABOR DAY THAT WAS A GAME CHANGER FOR ME.

THAT EVENING AROUND 10:00 PM SOMEONE STARTED RINGING MY FRONT DOOR BELL AND BANGING VERY VIOLENTLY ON MY DOOR.

IT SOUNDED AS IF SOMEONE WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO RAM THE DOOR WITH THEIR BODY AND BREAK IN, SORT LIKE JUMPING AGAINST THE DOOR OR RAMMING IT WITH THEIR SHOULDER.

I WAS HOME ALONE WHEN THIS OCCURRED AND FOR REALLY, I MEAN THIS, A FEW HEART-STOPPING MINUTES, I FELT A LITTLE BIT TERRORIZED.

I DIDN'T KNOW IF IT WAS AN ATTEMPT AT HOME INVASION AND I HAD JUST HAD A PROCEDURE ON MY LEG.

BUT DESPITE THAT, [LAUGHTER] I ROLLED OFF THE SOFA AND CRAWLED INTO MY KITCHEN IN THE DARK FOR MY SON ROOM AND CALLED THE POLICE WITH MY KITCHEN PHONE.

I WAS REALLY HONESTLY IN ALMOST NEAR HYSTERICS, NOT TO DRAMATIZE THINGS, BUT I LIKE TO THINK I STAY CALM IN EMERGENCIES BUT APPARENTLY THAT NIGHT [LAUGHTER] WELL, I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.

THEY SAID TO ME THEY WOULD COME AS SOON AS THEY COULD.

IT TOOK A LITTLE TIME BECAUSE THEY HAD A SERIOUS TRACK ISSUE TO HANDLE.

I CALLED A RELATIVE THAT NIGHT TO STAY ON THE PHONE WITH ME UNTIL THE POLICE COULD ARRIVE.

THE NEXT MORNING MY NEIGHBORS WERE OUT PICKING UP THE TRASH LEFT BY THE KIDS AND WE STARTED CHATTING WITH EACH OTHER AND I CAME TO LEARN, MY HUSBAND AND I, WE CAME TO LEARN THAT THIS WAS THE ANNUAL SCAVENGER HUNT FOR THIS YEAR WHICH SOMETIMES HAPPENS EITHER WHEN SCHOOL CLOSES OR JUST BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS.

THEN WE STARTED FINDING OUT LITTLE BITS AND PIECES OF WHAT WENT ON DURING THIS EVENT.

WE FOUND CRUMPLED PAPERS ALONG THE STREET WITH A FEW OF THE TASKS THAT THE TEAM PERFORMED TO EARN POINTS IN THE GAME.

DON'T WORRY, I'VE CLEANED IT UP.

TEST NUMBER 166 WAS, SEX IN THE HUT BY THE BARTOW-PELL MANSION, WITH THE CAVEAT, REMEMBER AGE OF CONSENT IS 17 AND REMEMBER PROTECTION.

TASKS 144-165 INCLUDED 24 SHOTS FOR THE CLASS OF 2024, RUN A LAP AROUND SHORE PARK NAKED, STEAL A NO PARKING SIGN, POST A PICTURE OF YOUR BEAR ANATOMY, WE JUST CLEANED UP, ON INSTAGRAM, EAT A DOUGHNUT OFF A TEAMMATES ANATOMY ALSO CLEANED UP, AND THE VIDEO CAN BE FROM BEHIND.

THAT WAS JUST SOME. WE ONLY HAD A FEW OF THE TASKS THAT WE WERE ABLE TO RECOVER WITH THE PAPERS.

THEN I CAME TO LEARN THAT THE BREAK-IN STUMPED THAT HAPPENED TO ME ALSO HAPPENED TO MY NEIGHBOR AT THE OPPOSITE CORNER FROM ME,

[00:05:02]

I'M ON A CORNER.

HOUSES WITH A CERTAIN NUMBER IN THEIR ADDRESS WERE TARGETED FOR THIS SCARY TASK ON THE SCAVENGER HUNT LIST.

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT RESIDENCE WAS THE ADULT OWNER'S SON OPENED THE DOOR AND HE CONFRONTED THE KIDS AND THEY CURSED AT HIM AND THEY THREW GARBAGE IN HIS DRIVEWAY.

THAT'S WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I DECIDED TO MAKE THE LOCAL LEADERS AWARE OF WHAT OCCURRED THAT NIGHT.

MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH SPOKE TO THE VILLAGE MAYOR, THE VILLAGE MANAGER, AND THE POLICE CHIEF.

I REALLY WANT TO SINCERELY THANK THEM FOR LISTENING TO JOHN AND I, ALONG WITH OUR MANY CONCERNED NEIGHBORS, MY NEIGHBORS SHOWED UP.

IN RESPONSE, THEY SENT OUT ALERTS WARNING ABOUT THE ISSUES WITH THIS YEAR SCAVENGER HUNT.

I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT THE POLICE BEEFED UP THEIR PRESENCE AT NIGHT IN OUR AREA.

I WANT TO GO ON RECORD SAYING, I REALLY APPRECIATE THE WAY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN RESPONSIVE AND JUST LISTEN WHICH IS HELPFUL SOMETIMES WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS.

WE'VE ALSO SPOKEN TO OUR LOCAL RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND THE SCHOOL BOARD.

I'M IN A MISSION TO JUST RAISE COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF THIS PROBLEM, THAT'S THE MAIN REASON I'M HERE TO SPEAK TONIGHT.

IT'S THE LAST OF THE TASKS ON MY LIST.

I WOULD NEVER PRESUME TO TELL PARENTS HOW TO PARENT OR KIDS HOW TO BEHAVE.

I JUST WANT PARENTS TO UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS ARE SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT THAN WHEN THEY MAY HAVE "GONE TO THE WOODS".

WITH SOCIAL MEDIA, WHAT ONCE WAS 20 KIDS CAN EASILY AND QUICKLY MORPH INTO A HORDE OF 200 KIDS.

I'VE SEEN IT WITH MY OWN EYES, UNDERAGE DRINKING CAN ESCALATE TO BEHAVIOR THAT'S A LOT RISKIER AND FRANKLY MUCH MORE RECKLESS.

I COULD TELL YOU MANY STORIES OF TEENAGERS BEHAVING, I HATE TO USE THIS WORD, BUT FOOLISHLY, LIKE DRUNKEN KIDS JUMPING INTO NEIGHBORS POOLS, KIDS JUMPING ON TRAMPOLINES, KIDS URINATING AND OTHER KIDS THINKING IT'S FUNNY AND FILMING THEM.

BUT I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH ONE LAST STORY THAT REALLY STAYED WITH ME.

THIS HAPPENED A FEW YEARS AGO.

I WAS SITTING IN MY SON ROOM AND I WAS HAVING DINNER AND I HEARD A CAR PULL UP.

I HEARD CRYING, AND JUST AS I LOOKED OUT, THERE WAS A GIRL WHO STUMBLED OUT OF A CAR AND SHE WAS REALLY CRYING HYSTERICALLY AND SHE WAS RUNNING UP MY SIDEWALK AND SHE WAS RUNNING WITH NO SHOES ON.

I RAN TO THE DOOR AND I ASKED HER IF SHE NEEDED HELP AND I ASKED HER IF SHE WAS OKAY AND I TRIED TO CONVINCE HER THAT MAYBE SHE COULD COME IN, I INTRODUCED MYSELF, MAYBE SHE COULD JUST SIT ON THE STOOP AND WE COULD FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO NEXT.

BUT SHE SHE SAID TO ME, "I'M OKAY" BUT CLEARLY TO ME SHE WASN'T OKAY.

SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT HER, WHAT HAPPENED TO HER? COULD I HAVE DONE SOMETHING DIFFERENTLY? I THINK THAT'S THE OTHER PART OF THE REASON WHY I'M HERE.

I'M HOPING THAT BY SPEAKING UP IT CAN HELP SAFEGUARD MY NEIGHBORHOOD BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, SAFEGUARD OUR KIDS.

THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SPEAK. [APPLAUSE]

>> [APPLAUSE] THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> L KNOW WE DON'T NORMALLY RESPOND, BUT I CERTAINLY FEEL I'D LIKE TO RESPOND TONIGHT.

FIRST, I'M SORRY FOR THE EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WENT THROUGH THAT IS NOTHING THAT ANYONE SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH.

I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW THE TERROR THAT YOU MUST HAVE FELT IN THAT MOMENT, NOT KNOWING WHAT'S GOING ON OR THAT ANYONE WOULD FEEL THAT WAY.

AS YOU SAID, I THINK YOU RECOGNIZE WHAT THE EVENT IS.

EVEN IN MY TIME HERE, I THINK IT'S CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY.

I THINK THERE'S BEEN A BIG INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THAT PERSONALLY, NOT TO ALWAYS BLAME THAT, BUT THINGS LIKE TIKTOK HAVE DEFINITELY PUSHED THE ENVELOPE.

I THINK WE ALL KNOW THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL-SANCTIONED EVENT.

THIS IS LONGSTANDING, L CALL IT TRADITION, SMALL TEACHER EDITION, BUT THAT MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE, AND MR. MARKOWITZ HAS NOTIFIED PARENTS OF THIS EVERY YEAR HE'S BEEN HERE, MRS. CLARK, LONG BEFORE HIM.

AS A DISTRICT, WE ALWAYS ARE NOTIFYING PARENTS BECAUSE, TO YOUR POINT, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.

IT'S GENERALLY BEFORE SCHOOL, IS OFF SCHOOL PROPERTY.

THE MESSAGE IS ALWAYS SENT TO STUDENTS ABOUT GOOD CHOICES, ABOUT BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS, ABOUT BEING GOOD CITIZENS, AND REPRESENTING YOUR SCHOOL.

THEY DO NOT ALWAYS DO THAT THE WAY THAT WE HOPE THAT THEY DO.

I APPRECIATE I'LL BE HONEST, THE GRACIOUSNESS IN WHICH YOU CAME TONIGHT, YOU COULD HAVE COME VERY DIFFERENTLY.

I HOPE THAT OUR STUDENTS TAKE THAT LESSON AS WELL, THAT THESE ARE OUR NEIGHBORS.

THESE ARE FAMILY FRIENDS WHO DON'T WANT TO RUIN ALL THE FUN BUT WANT EVERYBODY TO BE SAFE AND HEALTHY.

[00:10:05]

I THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS UP.

WE ALWAYS DO, WE WORK THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

I KNOW THIS SCHOOL HAS A LOT OF ASSEMBLIES PLANNED, A LOT OF DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES TO REINFORCE GOOD DECISION-MAKING CONSEQUENCES OF DECISIONS AND REALLY REINFORCE THAT CITIZENSHIP.

WE STARTED THIS YEAR AS SEAL OF CIVIC READINESS.

THAT I THINK IS AGAIN, PART OF TRYING TO UNDERSCORE RESPONSIBILITY TO YOUR COMMUNITY, GOOD DECISION-MAKING, AND GOOD LEADERSHIP.

AGAIN, I'M SORRY. BUT I THANK YOU FOR COMING TONIGHT AND FOR SHARING WITH US.

>> DOES ANYTHING IN OUR CODE OF CONDUCT APPLY TO THIS AT ALL?

>> NO. BECAUSE THERE'S NO NEXUS TO SCHOOL IN THAT IT WAS COMPLETELY OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.

TIME OFF SCHOOL PROPERTY DIDN'T CAUSE A DISRUPTION TO THE SCHOOL.

IT WAS ALL OUTSIDE OF OUR JURISDICTION.

I THINK AS WAS PRESENTED EVEN SOME OF THE LOCATIONS, SOME OF THIS IS CHALLENGING FOR OUR LOCAL POLICE BECAUSE ALTHOUGH THE WOODS WHERE THE KIDS GO IS ENTERED THROUGH THE MANNER, THEY'RE ACTUALLY IN BRONX JURISDICTION WHEN MUCH OF THAT HAPPENS, SO IT'S REALLY CHALLENGING FOR ALL THE COMMUNITY LEADERS TO REALLY BE ENFORCEMENT.

I DID HAVE SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH LINDSAY LEFT THE VILLAGE ADMINISTRATOR ABOUT THIS.

I KNOW THAT THEY'VE WORKED TO INCREASE POLICE PATROL TO TRY TO BE PROACTIVE AND HEADING OFF THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.

WE'RE WORKING TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS TO THERE'S EVENTS WHERE IF WE GET WORRIED THAT THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE AWARE SO THAT THEY CAN IF THEY'RE ABLE TO DEPLOY MORE RESOURCES. IT'S A CHALLENGE.

>> RIGHT. IS IT TYPICALLY SENIORS THAT ARE ORGANIZING IT?

>> THAT'S MY UNDERSTANDING. YEAH.

>> IT'S NOT REALLY A DISCIPLINARY ISSUE FOR US BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AT SCHOOL OR NOT, BUT I THINK THERE'S AN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY AND MAYBE WE CALL IT CHARACTER EDUCATION.

THIS SCHOOL AS A NATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHARACTER, WE HAVE A WORLD EXPERT IN CHARACTER EDUCATION, LET'S SAY.

BUT I THINK THERE'S A LOT OF, AS WE'RE DOING OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, MAYBE THAT'S SOMETHING WE THINK ABOUT.

>> YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT POINT. YEAH.

>> THANK YOU. OKAY, 2.1.

>> WAIT A SECOND.

>> JOHN CASPER. SAME ADDRESS. TINA'S HUSBAND.

I WANT TO ALSO SAY THANK YOU TO PAULINE AND TO MICHAEL BECAUSE WE'VE SPOKEN A FEW TIMES.

I WANTED TO JUST TO SAY THANK YOU.

I APPRECIATE EVERYONE TAKING THE TIME TO ALLOW US TO SPEAK.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING ABOUT IT'S NOT SCHOOL SANCTIONED.

BUT TO ME, I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE REALLY GREAT SPORTS HERE AND L THINK THAT THE CAPTAINS OF THE TEAMS SHOULD REALLY BE ADVOCATES OF GOOD BEHAVIOR AND THEY SHOULD BE THE ONES THAT MAYBE COULD SPEAK TOWARDS GOOD BEHAVIOR AND THIS IS NOT A SCAVENGER HUNT, YOU COULD CALL IF YOU WANT, BUT IT'S NOT A SCAVENGER HUNT.

BUT THESE TYPES OF ENLISTED AND HORRIBLE BEHAVIOR SHOULD NOT BE DONE AT ALL.

MAYBE THE CAPTAINS CAN BECAUSE THEY'RE THE LEADERS.

YOUR BASEBALL CAP TO FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, SO ON, THEY CAN BE THE ONES THAT MAYBE CAN ADVOCATE BECAUSE I THINK MOST OF THE KIDS ARE GOING TO LOOK UP TO THEM AND SAY, LISTEN, YOU GUYS, WE CAN'T BE DOING THIS.

IT'S NOT RIGHT. THESE ARE OUR NEIGHBORS. THERE'S A LINE.

IT'S ONE THING IF YOU TOILET PAPER OR CHALK ON THE STREET OR WATER.

BUT WHEN YOU START DOING OTHER THINGS, YOU CAN'T DO THAT.

THE OTHER THING THAT I JUST WANT TO SAY IS THESE ARE ALL BEING VIDEOTAPED AND THE KIDS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT FIVE, 10, 15 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD WHEN YOU'RE APPLYING TO BE A JUDGE OR A SET OR WHATEVER POSITION, SOMEBODY MIGHT HAVE THAT VIDEO, AND GUESS WHAT? YOUR LIFE, YOUR CAREER IS GOING TO BE DESTROYED BECAUSE WHEN YOU WERE 16, YOU DID SOMETHING FOOLISH.

I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO UNDERSTAND THE RAMIFICATIONS.

THEY WANT TO HAVE FUN NOW, BUT IN THE LONG RUN, IT'S REALLY GOING TO BE HARMFUL.

AGAIN, MY WIFE AND I ARE NOT LOOKING TO JAM UP WHOEVER DID THIS.

WE REALLY WANTED TO JUST AVOID IT FROM HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE.

IF US SPEAKING OUT COULD STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING, THEN WE FEEL LIKE THAT'S REALLY THE BEST OUTCOME THAT WE CAN POSSIBLY GET.

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO US. WE APPRECIATE IT.

>> THANK YOU. JUST ONE PIECE TO ADD TO THAT.

[00:15:01]

THERE'LL BE INTERESTED TO KNOW WE WERE JUST ACTUALLY MEETING WITH PELHAM TOGETHER TODAY.

ONE OF THE EFFORTS THAT THEY'VE BEEN WORKING ON WITH US IN PARTNERSHIP IS TO WORK WITH OUR CAPTAINS OF OUR ATHLETIC TEAMS TO BE LEADERS AND HELP THEIR TEAMMATES MAKE GOOD CHOICES. WE'RE ON THE SAME PAGE.

>> THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> MORE TO COME.

>> OKAY. 2.1, APPROVAL OF MINUTES.

[2. Approval of Minutes]

I WOULD ASK FOR A MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF 30TH.

>> SO MOVED.

>> SECOND. ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSED ABSTENTIONS? NO. NEXT, THREE ADMINISTRATIVE AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

[3.1 Superintendent's Report]

AND WE START WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

>> YES. IT'S A BIG ONE TONIGHT, BUT IT'S THE OPENING OF SCHOOL AND IT'S BEEN A BUSY BUSY SUMMER.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT PIECES TO TONIGHT.

I'M GOING TO JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS TO START WITH.

THEN L'M GOING TO INVITE SOME ACTUAL GUESTS TO SPEAK ABOUT SOME REALLY EXCITING THINGS IN THE YEAR TO COME.

THEN I'M GOING TO RESUME WITH A VARIETY OF THINGS, INCLUDING FACILITIES REPORT.

JIM IS SICK AND NOT ABLE TO BE WITH US TONIGHT, SO I'M GOING TO BE DOING THAT AS WELL AS SHARING THE GOALS THAT WILL BE ON THE AGENDA FOR FURTHER APPROVAL.

JUST TO KICK OFF VERY QUICKLY BEFORE OUR GUESTS COME UP.

WE HAD A WONDERFUL OPENING OF SCHOOLS. FOR ME.

I KEPT SAYING IT WAS SHOCKINGLY NORMAL, WHICH POST-COVID [LAUGHTER] MEANS IT FELT LIKE A PRE-COVID TO ME.

FROM WHERE I SAT, IT WAS REALLY EXCITING, I'M SURE DR. BOEHM WILL PROBABLY TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SUPERINTENDENT'S CONFERENCE DAYS.

BUT THERE WAS A REAL GENUINE LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT, ENGAGEMENT, POSITIVITY.

THEY WERE READY.

THEY'D HAD THE GREAT SUMMER THAT THEY NEEDED AND ANYONE WHO'S BEEN IN EDUCATION KNOWS HOW MUCH BY JUNE YOU'VE SPENT.

YOU'VE GIVEN EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO GIVE.

PEOPLE GOT THE SUMMER THAT THEY NEEDED AND THEY WERE EXCITED AND READY TO COME BACK AND MEET THEIR KIDS.

WE HAD A REALLY SMOOTH OPENING DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS RIDICULOUSLY HOT.

I WANT TO THANK OUR FACULTY, THANK OUR KIDS FOR ENDURING THOSE FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS.

I'M THANKFUL THAT WE DO HAVE AIR CONDITIONING IN SOME OF THE BUILDINGS.

I KNOW THE BUILDING LEADERS MADE ADJUSTMENTS, ESPECIALLY ON THE FIRST DAY AND INTO THE SECOND DAY AS NEEDED, SO THAT IF THERE WERE CLASSES THAT NEEDED TO ACCESS AIR CONDITIONING, THEY COULD FIND A WAY TO DO THAT.

WE KNOW THAT THERE'S GROWTH TO HAPPEN IN THAT AREA AS WE CONSIDER OUR FACILITIES IN THE FUTURE.

BUT REALLY THANK THEM FOR REALLY FOR ADAPTING AND DEALING WITH THAT HEAT AND NOT LETTING IT RUIN THE VALUE AND THE EXCITEMENT OF THOSE FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS.

IT WAS REALLY NICE TO ME TO GO AROUND TO THE BUILDINGS AND GET TO SEE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY SPENT TIME AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY IMMEDIATELY BEING IMPLEMENTED IN THE CLASSROOM.

THAT WAS VERY EXCITING.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT EVENT THAT I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THIS WEEK THAT I WANTED TO MENTION IS CERTAINLY OUR COMMUNITY AND A COUPLE OF BOARD MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO JOIN ME FOR THAT TO THE COMMUNITY ON 9/11 CELEBRATION.

MEMORIAL IS THE BETTER WORD FOR IT.

REALLY IT'S ALWAYS SUCH A SPECIAL EVENT.

THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I BEAR MY VERY FIRST YEAR IN PELHAM LEARNED HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS THE COMMUNITY AND THE RESIDENTS WHO WERE LOST THERE.

JUST APPRECIATE THE TOWN SUPERVISORS FOR PUTTING THAT TOGETHER.

BOTH THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS WHO WERE THERE, POLICE HAD REPRESENTATIVE AS WELL AND JUST THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE ALL THE FOLKS THAT WERE LOST THAT DAY AND CONTINUE TO KEEP THAT ALIVE.

ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS DO HOLD A MOMENT OF SILENCE ON 9/11.

GOVERNOR, PASS THE REGULATION AROUND THAT A FEW YEARS AGO, WE'D ALREADY BEEN DOING THAT.

IT'S IMPORTANT, I THINK TO AS IT'S 22ND YEAR, THE STUDENTS IN OUR SCHOOLS WERE NOT ALIVE WHEN 9/11 HAPPENED.

CONTINUE TO KEEP THAT HISTORY LESSON IN FRONT OF THEM IS, I THINK JUST CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TO WHO WE ARE AS A COMMUNITY BUT ALSO AS A NATION.

WE'RE HAPPY ABOUT THAT.

I'LL PUT THIS ON YOUR RADAR NOW.

WE'VE GOT A COUPLE OF YEARS TO THINK ABOUT IT.

CHIEF BANQUET DID APPROACH ME ABOUT THE IDEA OF ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11, POTENTIALLY CONSIDERING SOME MAYBE DELAYED START TO SCHOOL SO THAT WE COULD FIND A WAY FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES TO BE MORE INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY EVENTS, BUT THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I AM DEFINITELY OPEN TO.

AGAIN, WE'VE GOT A COUPLE OF YEARS BEFORE WE GET THERE, BUT I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT AND AS THAT APPROACHES WE CAN START TO THINK ABOUT THAT.

BEFORE I CONTINUE INTO ALL THE OTHER EXCITING PIECES OF THE YEAR, EXCUSE ME, OF THE OPENING OF SCHOOL, DR. CALLAGHAN AND DR. KIM LEGAL ARE HERE TONIGHT AS SPECIAL GUEST TO SHARE WHAT IS A REALLY EXCITING INITIATIVE THAT IS GOING TO BE IN FRONT OF US FOR THE YEAR TO COME.

I WOULD LOVE TO INVITE THEM TO TALK TO US ABOUT PELHAM CHASES SPACE.

[00:20:04]

>> WE'RE REALLY VERY APPRECIATIVE OF THE COMMUNITY AND PELHAM AND THE TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF RESOURCES THAT IT PROVIDES US.

WE HAVE A REALLY NICE CONNECTION TO A LOT OF THOSE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT STARTED REALLY PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC AND ACTUALLY WENT VIRTUAL THROUGH THE PANDEMIC.

WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO BUILD ON SOME OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS.

WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT IN A LITTLE BIT.

BUT IT REALLY STARTED WHEN DR. REGAL, WHO IS AN ACOUSTIC PHYSICIST AND A PROFESSOR OF PHYSICS AT SUNNI FURNINGDALE APPROACHED ME ABOUT STRENGTHENING SOME OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND USING IT TO PROMOTE SCIENCE IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND ALSO THE HOME SCHOOL COMMUNITY CONNECTION THAT WE FEEL HERE.

WE JUST REALLY WANTED TO STRENGTHEN THAT AND WE'VE REALLY DONE THAT, I THINK REALLY WELL OVER THE YEARS.

WE'VE HAD A PARTICULARLY SUCCESSFUL ASK A SCIENTIST SERIES, A STEM SERIES, DIVERSITY IN STEM MOVIE SERIES THAT WE'VE HAD THE PLEASURE OF REALLY RENEWING EVERY YEAR SINCE THE PANDEMIC AND WE WERE ALLOWED TO GO SEE MOVIES TOGETHER AGAIN.

WE'RE GOING TO GO THROUGH ALL THAT.

BUT THIS ALL STARTED WITH SOMETHING THAT KIM'S GOING TO HIGHLIGHT CALLED THE BOY WHO HARNESS THE WIND A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

WE DECIDED CAN'T DO IT EVERY YEAR BECAUSE IT'S SUCH A HUGE UNDERTAKING.

IT REALLY TAKES A YEAR TO PLAN.

BUT THIS IS THE NEXT ITERATION OF THE BOY WHO HARNESSS THE WIND.

WE BROUGHT IN EVEN MORE STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS ITERATION.

I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO KIM AND SHE'S GOING TO GIVE SOME BACKGROUND AND TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT PELHAM CHASES SPACE THIS YEAR.

THEN I'LL BE BACK TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS THAT ARE COMING UP. THANK YOU.

>> HELLO. I'M KIM REGAL.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR GIVING US SOME TIME IN YOUR REPORT, DR.

CHAMP, TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS.

I'M GOING TO TALK TODAY A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE PREVIOUS WORK THAT WE'VE DONE AND WHAT SPURRED THIS AND THEN SOME OF THE PLANNED PROGRAMMING AND GOALS THAT WE HAVE FOR THIS YEAR.

TOM IS GOING TO TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT ARE GOING TO HAPPEN.

ALSO, THE TEAM THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH AND SORT OF ACKNOWLEDGE JUST HOW MUCH WORK THEY PUT INTO PLAN ALL OF THIS.

WHERE WE STARTED. I WAS ORIGINALLY WITH THE JUNIOR LEAGUE AND I PROPOSED A PROJECT TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG CHILDREN TO DO SCIENCE AND TO NORMALIZE THE IDEA OF WOMEN BEING SCIENTISTS, AND SO EXPOSING PRESCHOOLERS WAS WHERE IT STARTED TO WOMEN DOING SCIENCE.

WE'D GO INTO PRESCHOOLS AND WE DO EXPERIMENTS AND WE DID A COMMUNITY EVENT AND WE WERE SOLD OUT IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES.

I REALIZED THAT MAYBE THERE'S SOME PLACE FOR OLDER KIDS ALSO THAT MIGHT BE HUNGRY FOR SOME OF THESE, THIS PROGRAMMING.

I REACHED OUT TO TOM AND THAT WAS WHERE IT STARTED.

I HAD MY FIRST MEETING WITH TOM IN FEBRUARY OF 2020.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO COLLABORATE AND BRING BACK AN EVENING PORTION OF STEAMED DAY AND TRY AND DO THAT.

WE HAD ALL THESE GREAT PLANS HAVING A EVENT AND THEN MARCH HAPPENED.

I THINK AFTER THE FIRST TWO WEEKS AND WE'RE VIRTUAL, I REACHED OUT TO TOM AND I SAID, I THINK WE SHOULD KEEP DOING IT ANYWAY.

[LAUGHTER] WE WERE ABLE TO ORGANIZE A VIRTUAL EARTH DAY CELEBRATION, WHICH WAS ON A SMALLER SCALE, WHICH WENT REALLY WELL.

THEN WE ENDED UP DOING A STEAM DAY CELEBRATION AT THE END OF THAT SCHOOL YEAR.

WE DID KITCHEN SCIENCE AND WE MADE PLASTIC OUT OF MILK. IT WAS AWESOME.

IT WAS AMAZING HOW MANY SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS YOU CAN DO WITH JUST THE THINGS THAT ARE IN YOUR KITCHEN WHEN YOU HAVEN'T BEEN SHOPPING BECAUSE THERE'S A PANDEMIC.

THAT WAS WHAT I LEARNED FROM THAT EXPERIENCE.

BUT WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH SOME REALLY GREAT VIRTUAL COLLABORATIONS.

THEN WHEN WE GOT BACK TOGETHER, WE WERE, WELL NOW WE CAN DO EVEN MORE STUFF.

WE PUT TOGETHER THE STEM MOVIE SERIES AND WE SHOWED, I THINK IT WAS SEVEN MOVIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THAT WE'RE ALL THEMED FOR THE DIFFERENT HERITAGE MONTHS.

TO SHOW REPRESENTATION IN SCIENCE.

WE ORGANIZED ASK A SCIENTIST, WHICH ARE EVENTS THAT RANGE.

WE DO DIFFERENT AGE RANGES AND HAVE SCIENTISTS COME VIRTUALLY AND THEY GIVE A VERY SHORT TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY DO.

THEN WE GIVE THE KIDS 30-40 MINUTES TO JUST ASK QUESTIONS.

IT'S AWESOME WHEN KID ASKED ME IF I'D EVER MADE A TIME MACHINE.

I CAN ANSWER YES BECAUSE I WORK IN SUPERSONIC TRAVEL.

SOMETIMES YOU GET THERE BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

[00:25:02]

THEN LAST YEAR WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO DO THE PELHAM SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR FOR FOURTH GRADERS.

WE HAD ALL FOURTH GRADERS FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS COULD COME AND DISPLAY THEIR STEAM DAY PROJECTS AT NIGHT UNTIL THEIR PARENTS WHO COULDN'T COME DURING THE DAY COULD SEE SOME OF THE GREAT STUFF THAT PEOPLE ARE DOING.

THAT WAS REALLY EXCITED. THEN THE ORIGINAL JUNIOR LEAGUE PROJECT HAS NOW BECOME A STANDALONE NON-PROFITS.

THIS YEAR I STARTED MY OWN NON-PROFIT CALLED MINDSET, WHICH HAS A VERY LONG NAME BECAUSE I'M REALLY GOOD AT ACRONYMS. BUT OUR MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR ALL LEARNERS BY PROVIDING HOLISTIC EDUCATION EXPERIENCES.

IF YOU'RE TALKING TO A ROOM OF SCIENTISTS, THEY DON'T NEED TO BE CONVINCED TO BE SCIENTISTS.

OUR GOAL IS TO BRING PEOPLE INTO STEM, EVEN IF IT'S NOT AS A CAREER, BUT TO TAKE AWAY SOME OF THAT ANXIETY THROUGH THE HUMANITIES.

WE ALSO PROVIDE TOOLS AND TRAININGS FOR TEACHERS AND WE BUILD RELATIONSHIPS IN THE COMMUNITY.

TRYING TO GET SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND THE PARENTS AND THE NON-PROFITS AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS ALL TO COME TOGETHER AND REALLY PROVIDE THE MOST OPPORTUNITY THAT WE CAN FOR OUR KIDS.

THE FIRST TIME THAT WE DID THIS WAS PELHAM HARNESSES THE WIND.

IT WAS A PRETTY BIG UNDERTAKING FOR OUR FIRST-TIME.

WE HAD NINE MONTHS OF EVENTS.

WE SHOWED THAT WAS WHAT WE SHOWED OUR DIVERSITY IN STEM MOVIE SERIES, WHICH STARTED WITH THE MOVIE OF THE BOY WHO HARNESS THE WIND.

WE HAD BOOK DISCUSSIONS.

WE HAD THE AUTHOR CAME AND GAVE A TALK.

WE HAD MASK-MAKING AN AFRICAN DANCE AT THE ART CENTER.

WE HAD BUILT INTO THE CURRICULUM, THE BOOK, ALL GRADES K12. IT'S REALLY EXCITING.

WE DID TONS OF STUFF AND SO THEN IF YOU'VE EVER MET ME OR CHARM, THEN WE SAID, OH, WELL, NOW WE JUST HAVE TO DO IT BIGGER AND BETTER.

THAT IS OUR GOAL FOR THIS YEAR.

WE HAVE PICKED A THEME SURROUNDING LELAND MELVIN'S CHASING SPACE.

WE REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK BECAUSE HE WAS A NASA ASTRONAUT AND HE IS THE ONLY NASA ASTRONAUT EVER BEEN DRAFTED INTO THE NFL.

BUT HE'S ALSO A MATERIAL SCIENTIST AND AN ENGINEER.

HE'S A PHOTOGRAPHER.

HE LOVES NATURE.

HE WAS THE WHITE HOUSE STEM EDUCATION ADVISOR.

HE'S REALLY IS A TRUE RENAISSANCE MAN, WHICH I FEEL FITS OUR MISSION VERY WELL AND ALLOWS US TO PULL FROM ALL THESE DIFFERENT THEMES TO INCORPORATE THAT INTO THE COMMUNITY.

I'M GOING TO LET TOM TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR TIMELINE AND WHAT WE HAVE IN STORE SURROUNDING THIS BOOK.

>> WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT DUE TO THE GENEROSITY OF THE PEF, WE'VE SECURED A GRANT TO BRING THE AUTHOR LELAND MELVIN, TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

LELAND MELVIN WILL BE HERE ON OCTOBER 3RD.

HE'LL COME FOR OUR LAUNCH EVENT. WE SEE WHAT WE DID THERE.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A COMMUTE IN A LAUNCH EVENT, 6:00 P.M. AT THE HIGH-SCHOOL IN THE AUDITORIUM.

HE'LL ALSO BE SPEAKING TO THE SIXTH GRADE AND OUR PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY CLASSES AND THE HIGH SCHOOL.

ON THE SAME DAY, WE'LL BE INVITING THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE PEF TO A RECEPTION WITH LELAND MELVIN RIGHT BEFORE THAT SPEECH AT 5:00 O'CLOCK.

YOU'LL ALL BE INVITED TO THAT.

WE'RE VERY EXCITED THAT HE'LL BE HERE TO ACTUALLY LAUNCH THIS EVENT ON.

>> OCTOBER 3RD?

>> OCTOBER 3RD.

>> YEAH 5:00 PM. OCTOBER 3RD.

FOR THE BOARD, IT'LL BE THERE'LL BE A RECEPTION AT 5:00 PM THAT EVENT WILL START AT 06:00 P.M. IN PELL MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM.

WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT BECAUSE NOT ONLY WILL HE SPEAK TO STUDENTS, BUT WILL THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

BUT WE REALLY WANTED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO COME SEE HIM WHEN HE SPEAKS AT NIGHT.

HE'LL BE SPEAKING AT 6:00 PM THAT EVENING.

THERE ARE BASICALLY THREE LEVELS OF CHASING SPACE THE BOOK.

THERE'S AN ELEMENTARY LEVEL, THE MIDDLE LEVEL, AND THEN AN ADULT BOOK.

THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WE PICKED IT IN ADDITION TO THE FACT THAT LELAND MELVIN HAS A VERY INTERESTING STORY AND REALLY HIS EXPERIENCES REALLY CROSSED THE DISCIPLINES, WHICH IS WHY WE REALLY LIKED HIM.

HE IS A PHOTOGRAPHER, BUT HE'S ALSO TRAVELED ABROAD AS PART OF HIS TRAINING AND HAS EXPERIENCES IN OTHER CULTURES.

HE HAS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE GROWING UP AND TRYING TO BALANCE HIS LIFE, WHICH IS SOMETHING WE TALKED TO TEENAGERS ABOUT ALL THE TIME.

BALANCING TRYING TO BE COVERING MATERIAL SCIENTISTS WITH ALSO TRYING TO BECOME AN NFL PLAYER AND THEN ULTIMATELY BECOMING AN ASTRONAUT.

THERE'S LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES TO HAVE SOME OF THESE DISCUSSIONS WITH OUR KIDS.

WE'LL HAVE THAT LAUNCH EVENT ON OCTOBER.

WE'VE ALSO PLANNED WITH LIBRARY, AND THIS WILL BE STUDENT-LED ACTUALLY.

ONE OF MY SUMMER INTERNS FROM PALM TOGETHER IS LEAVING THE BOOK DISCUSSION AT THE LIBRARY IN

[00:30:01]

OCTOBER ABOUT CHASING SPACE FOR ELEMENTARY-LEVEL STUDENTS.

ONE OF THE THINGS WE THOUGHT ABOUT FROM LAST TIME THAT WE REALLY REFLECTED ON, WANTED TO DO BETTER IS JUST A BALANCE BETWEEN ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY PROGRAMMING.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE ELEMENTARY MOVIES AND MORE ELEMENTARY EVENTS THAN WE HAD FOR THE BOY WHO HARNESS THE WIND.

WE WERE VERY REFLECTIVE ON THOSE SUCCESSES AND ALSO THE THINGS THAT WE COULD DO BETTER, AND THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS WE'D LIKE TO DO BETTER.

THERE'LL BE A MOVIE NIGHT WE'RE GOING TO SHOW OCTOBER SKY AT THE PICTURE HOUSE.

WE HAVE A SERIES OF, I THINK SEVEN MOVIES AGAIN, PLAN THAT'S EITHER SIX OR SEVEN, BUT REALLY, WE'RE TRYING TO DO ONE ALMOST EVERY MONTH.

WE'LL START WITH OCTOBER SKY AT THE PICTURE HOW IT'S IN OCTOBER.

AND THEN WE'LL HAVE ET IN DECEMBER LATER ON.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BOOK DISCUSSION.

AGAIN. [BACKGROUND] IN NOVEMBER, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE SOME AUTHOR VISITS.

DECEMBER, THIS IS REALLY EXCITING, WE HAD A MEETING ACTUALLY JUST YESTERDAY WE WERE EXPANDING ON SOME OF THE THINGS WE WANTED TO DO, BUT WE'RE GOING TO INTEGRATE INTO SOME OF OUR CONCERTS.

WE KNOW FOR SURE THE HIGH SCHOOL CONCERTS WILL HAVE A SPACE PIECE.

THE CHORAL SIDE AND THE ORCHESTRAL SIDE, AND SOME OF THOSE MUSIC PRODUCTIONS THAT WE'RE SO FOND OF DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WILL INCLUDE AND INTEGRATE SOME OF THESE MUSICAL PIECES FROM SPACE.

WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT, THE TEACHERS ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

WE'LL HAVE ADDITIONAL AUTHOR VISITS AND MOVIE NIGHTS IN JANUARY.

WE'RE LOOKING TO DO ART EXHIBITS.

THE REALLY COOL THING ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ITERATION OR COMMUNITY COLLABORATION IS LAST TIME DR. THOMPSON, WHO IS ALSO A WORKHORSE, WAS INVOLVED IN THE PELHAM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL 100TH YEAR CELEBRATION.

WE LEFT HER ALONE WHEN WE DID THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND BECAUSE SHE WAS SUPER BUSY.

BUT THIS TIME, SHE'S FREE TO HELP US WITH THIS EVENT.

SHE IS VERY INVOLVED AND YOU CAN SEE HER FINGERPRINTS ON THIS AS WELL.

WE HAVE A CREATIVE WRITING CHALLENGE THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IN FEBRUARY, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT SHE'S BROUGHT TO US FOR THIS.

IN MARCH, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN ASTRONAUT FOOD CHALLENGE.

WE'RE GOING TO TAKE SOME TANG AND DRY ICE CREAM AND SEE WHAT CUISINE WE CAN MAKE FROM IT.

THAT SHOULD BE REALLY COOL.

WE HAVE AN ASTRONOMY OBSERVATION NIGHT THAT WE'LL BE DOING WITH AARON WISNER, WHO'S OUR ASTRONOMY TEACHER AND OUR SCIENCE TEACHER WHO WILL BE LEADING THAT.

ANOTHER MOVIE NIGHT BUT THERE'S EVENTS LIKE THIS ALL YEAR WE'RE GOING TO DO A STOMP ROCKET BUILD.

LAST TIME WE BUILT WINDMILLS, SO THIS TIME WE'RE GOING TO DO STOMP ROCKETS.

THERE'S A SOLAR ECLIPSE IN APRIL, WHICH WE'RE GOING TO INTEGRATE INTO THE CURRICULUM AS WELL, STEAM DAY AND A MOVIE NIGHT IN MAY AND THEN A CULMINATING PROJECT IN JUNE.

THAT CULMINATING PROJECT WILL BE WHAT WE'RE CALLING OUR LANDING EVENT.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE SENIORS WHO DO ROCKET LAUNCHES AS PART OF AP PHYSICS 2.

WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THAT A PUBLIC EVENT THIS YEAR.

PEOPLE COME AND SEE THE ROCKETS AND REALLY THE ROCKETS THAT RETURN BACK TO EARTH AND HOW WE BRING THEM BACK TO EARTH.

THAT PROCESS WITH DAVE SHURBAR IS AP PHYSICS 2 KIDS.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THAT AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A SCALED TOUR OF THE PLANETS.

WE'LL HAVE PLANETS ALL OVER PELHAM THAT WILL HAVE A SCALED DISTANCE FROM ONE ANOTHER THAT KIDS CAN VISIT, WHICH WAS ACTUALLY KIM'S IDEA AS PART OF THE LANDING PROJECTS.

WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS IN STORE FOR US THIS YEAR.

AS PART OF REALLY OUR IMPROVEMENT PLAN OVER THE BOY WHO HARNESSED, ONE WE HAD BASICALLY A DEBRIEF AND WE TALKED ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT WE WANTED TO DO BETTER THIS TIME.

WE WANTED TO HAVE A REALLY ROBUST ELEMENTARY PIECE TO THIS.

WE'VE WORKED ON THAT AND YOU CAN SEE THAT REFLECTED IN THE EVENTS.

THE OTHER THING AND KIM'S SUPER GOOD AT THIS BRANDING AND MARKETING, WE WANTED TO IMPROVE THAT A LITTLE BIT.

YOU'LL NOTICE THAT EITHER AT YOUR DESKS OR SHERYL HAS BEEN WEARING IT SINCE I GAVE IT TO HER I THINK, YOU HAVE CHASING SPACE LANYARDS.

ON THE CHASING SPACE LANYARD, YOU'LL SEE THE LOGO THAT KIM DESIGNED FOR CHASING SPACE THIS YEAR.

ON THE BACK, IS A QR CODE.

IF YOU SCAN THIS WITH YOUR PHONE, THIS WILL BRING UP THE CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE YEAR.

YOU'LL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO ACCESS WHAT'S GOING ON ALL YEAR BY SCANNING THE QR CODE.

AGAIN, WE REALLY WANTED TO WORK ON MARKETING.

WE WANT TO THANK ALEX FOR ALL HIS WORK IN THE PAST.

WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE OUR WORK IN COLLABORATION WITH HIM TO HAVE AN EVEN MORE I THINK, SUCCESSFUL MARKETING CAMPAIGN AROUND GETTING THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY INVOLVED.

THEN TO BRING IN THE HUMANITIES, AS I MENTIONED.

SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS ARE ALSO NOW INVOLVED.

WHAT WE'RE DOING ALSO IS DEVELOPING, AND WE DID THIS FOR THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND.

WE HAD A PARENT INFOGRAPHIC THAT SHOWED YOU K THROUGH 12, HOW THE BOY WHO HARNESS THE WIND WOULD MAKE IT INTO OUR CLASSROOMS. WE'RE GOING TO DO THE SAME THING FOR CHASING SPACE.

I CAN TELL YOU IF YOU KNOW MY SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE TEAM, AS SOON AS I ANNOUNCED THAT LELAND MELVIN WAS GOING TO BE HERE ON OCTOBER 3RD, LITERALLY LES LEFT THE MEETING AND ABOUT AN HOUR LATER THEY'RE LIKE, I HAVE AN EVENT THAT WE HAVE AN ACTIVITY WE CAN DO FOR LELAND MELVIN VISIT.

[00:35:02]

THAT WAS A SIXTH GRADE TEAM IS VERY EXCITED THAT HE'S COMING, BUT WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THAT K THROUGH 12.

I WANT TO THANK ALICIA DAMASIO WHO REALLY HELPS US WITH THAT K THROUGH 12 THREAD AND JOHN CEBALLOS IS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE AND HE'S BEEN REALLY, REALLY VALUABLE IN HELPING US DO SOME OF THOSE TECH PIECES AND THAT INTEGRATION PIECE.

WE'VE BROUGHT THE HUMANITIES IN AND AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, OUR MUSIC AND A LOT OF THE OTHER DISCIPLINES.

WE WANTED TO MAKE IT A PROJECT THAT EVERYBODY COULD GET INVOLVED IN.

THAT'S BEEN EXCITING.

HERE ARE THE MEMBERS OF OUR TEAM.

YOU'LL SEE DR. BOWMAN ON THERE AND SHE'S BROUGHT HER OWN REALLY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE AND ALSO SUPPORT FROM HER OFFICE TO THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT WHICH SOMETIMES INCLUDES FUNDING, SO THANK YOU, DR.

BOWMAN FOR SOME OF YOUR HELP THERE, ESPECIALLY WITH CURRICULUM WRITING AND THOSE RELATED THINGS.

BUT WE HAVE A REALLY GREAT TEAM.

PRINCIPAL BERKOWITZ JUST JUMPED ON AND DR. FITZGERALD IS THERE ON BEHALF OF THE ELEMENTARY CREW, THE PRINCIPLES AND THEN KIM AND BETH FIN, ALICIA, AND THEN WE START TO BRING IN OUR SCIENCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE AS WELL, WHICH TENDS TO SERVE ON THIS TEAM AND HELP US ROLL THESE THINGS UP.

I DO HAVE TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO THE HIGH-SCHOOL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT, WHICH GETS VERY INVOLVED IN THESE EVENTS AND THEY'VE ALREADY BEEN VERY EXCITED TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS AGAIN, THIS TIME AROUND.

HERE ARE OUR COLLABORATORS FOR THIS YEAR'S CHASING SPACE POEM CHASES SPACE.

WE HAVE SOME NEW COMPONENTS.

I WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL SHOUT-OUT TO PELHAM TOGETHER.

SHERYL ALLUDED TO THEM EARLIER.

WE COULD ONLY GET LELAND MELVIN ON THIS DAY.

THEY'RE ACTUALLY MOVING ONE OF THEIR EVENTS TO MAKE ROOM FOR OURS SO THEY CAN PARTICIPATE AS WELL.

I WANT TO THANK PELHAM TOGETHER, THEY'VE JUMPED ON THIS YEAR AND THEY'RE GOING TO DO A SOCIAL EMOTIONAL PIECE TO THIS.

STAY TUNED, WE'RE REALLY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

BUT LAURA CARUSO AND HER GROUP IS JUST FANTASTIC AND THEY WANT TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THOSE BALANCING THINGS THAT LELAND DOES IN THE BOOK, ALONG WITH SOME OF THE REALLY PRESSING ISSUES THAT SOME OF THEM WERE BROUGHT UP TONIGHT WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE FACING K THROUGH 12.

PELHAM TOGETHER IS GOING TO HELP US WITH THAT.

ALSO WE BROUGHT IN THE GIRL SCOUTS.

PELHAM REC IS A NEW COLLABORATOR HERE, AND THEN WE HAVE SOME OF OUR SUPPORTERS FROM LAST TIME.

THERE ARE MORE, WE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO PUT THEM ON HERE UNTIL WE GET AN OFFICIAL COMMITMENT.

THESE ARE ONES THAT ARE OFFICIALLY COMMITTED, BUT THERE'S A LOT OF OTHER MEMBERS THAT HAVE ALREADY TOLD US THAT THEY'RE PRETTY MUCH GOING TO JUMP ON BOARD TOO.

YOU SEE CIVICS IN THE LIBRARY THERE.

BUT THE PELHAM EDUCATION FOUNDATION, TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, HAS BEEN OUR BIGGEST SUPPORTER SO FAR BECAUSE THEY'VE PROVIDED GRANT MONEY THAT HAS ALLOWED US TO RUN THESE EVENTS.

WE'LL BE GETTING COPIES OF THE BOOKS FOR ALL OF THE LIBRARIES.

THE LIBRARIANS ARE CURATING CHASING SPACE DISPLAYS IN THE LIBRARIES IN ALL OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL, SO THAT HAS ALREADY STARTED.

LAUREN ROSENBERG ACTUALLY ALREADY HAS A CHASING SPACE RESOURCE GUIDE READY FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND THAT WAS JUST A WEEK OLD.

PEOPLE ARE REALLY JUMPING ON.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY FOR THEIR SUPPORT.

I WANT TO GIVE A BIG SHOUT OUT TO DR. KIM REGAL WHO REALLY PUSHES THE DISTRICT TO INCORPORATE THE COMMUNITY INTO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE DO AND YOU CAN DEFINITELY SEE THAT IN THE EXCITEMENT THAT SURROUNDS THESE TYPES OF EVENTS.

I'LL THROW HIM IN THERE SO DR. MACHINE HAS BEEN AT A NUMBER OF OUR BOY WHO HARNESS THE WIND EVENTS AND WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE THE FIRST TIME AROUND.

>> I LOVE THIS.

>> WE'RE ONE-UP THAT.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY WHO SUPPORTED US BOTH IN THE PAST.

DR. GARCIA WAS BIG INFLUENCE IN THE PAST AS WELL, HELPING ME AND SUPPORTING ME AS WE DID IT LAST TIME.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU.

I HOPE YOU GET INVOLVED.

BIG THANK YOU TO DR. REGAL AND EVERYTHING THAT SHE BRINGS TO THE PROJECT.

WITH THAT, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO KIM FOR ANY FINAL WORDS, BUT KEEP AN EYE ON THIS QR CODE.

IT WILL EVOLVE AS WE START TO POPULATE THE CALENDAR WITH EVEN MORE EVENTS.

THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]

>> [APPLAUSE] I JUST HAVE ONE THING TO SAY, WHICH IS, I WANTED TO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR GIVING US THE TIME.

BUT I HOPE THAT WE'LL SEE SOME OF YOU AT SOME OF THESE EVENTS BECAUSE IT'S REALLY EXCITING, AND TO SEE THE STUDENTS GET REALLY EXCITED ABOUT SOME OF THIS STUFF IS REALLY GREAT.

WE'D LOVE TO HAVE YOU THERE.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE TIME NOW, YOU CAN ALWAYS REACH OUT TO ME AND I'D BE HAPPY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS.

[00:40:04]

IF YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED SOMEHOW, I'D ALSO TAKE ANY HELP YOU WANT TO GIVE [LAUGHTER].

ANYTHING, ANYTIME, AND TOWN KNOWS HOW TO REACH ME.

ANYWAY, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]

>> I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH BECAUSE WHEN I THINK ABOUT OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND OF COURSE, THIS LAST YEAR OF THE CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN, THIS IS SO SPOT ON OF CAPTURING EVERY ELEMENT OF THAT PLAN.

WHEN YOU THINK OF AUTHENTIC LEARNING AND CULTURAL COMPETENCE AND THE WHOLE CHILD AND YOU GO DEAD CENTER IN IT, YOU GUYS HAVE NAILED IT WITH THIS, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I KNOW WE'RE SEEING THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG OF THE WORK AND THINKING AND PLANNING THAT HAS GONE INTO THIS AND THE MANY HANDS THAT WILL GO INTO IT.

I JUST CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR WHAT YOU'RE PROVIDING FOR OUR KIDS.

WELL DONE. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].

A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO.

>> YES. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW THAT.

WE'RE GOING FROM THE SUBLIME TO THE NOT-AS-EXCITING HERE.

THANK YOU BOTH. REALLY, HAVE A WONDERFUL NIGHT.

WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE TONIGHT TOO.

NOW THAT WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THIS STUFF IN THE YEAR AHEAD, I WANTED TO PROVIDE A COUPLE OF UPDATES ON ADDITIONAL PIECES ON THE OPENING TO SCHOOL.

I KNOW CERTAINLY I'M IN THE BOARD AND I HAVE BEEN TALKING A LOT ABOUT ENROLLMENTS, SECTIONS, AND ALL THAT THROUGHOUT.

SO JUST TO RECAP WHERE WE LANDED, AS OF RIGHT NOW, ACROSS THE SCHOOLS, WE ARE STILL AT OR WITHIN BOARD OF EDUCATION GUIDELINES FOR ALL THE GRADE LEVELS.

WE ARE PRETTY FULL IN SOME PLACES.

WE'VE TALKED ABOUT SIWANOY KINDERGARTEN.

WE ARE FULL AT 23 IN TWO DIFFERENT SECTIONS.

HUTCHINSON, WE'RE VERY CLOSE.

I BELIEVE WE ARE FULLY PROCESSED ON REGISTRATIONS.

I'M LOOKING AT DR. BOEHM BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE ONE OUTSTANDING.

BUT THIS YEAR, AND I THINK I SHARED IT WITH THE BOARD IN AN EMAIL I SENT A LITTLE EARLIER.

IT FELT LIKE AN ONSLAUGHT OF NEW REGISTRATIONS.

WHEN WE SAT BACK AND LOOKED AT THE DATA AND THE NUMBERS, IT WAS NO MORE THAN IN PRIOR YEARS.

THEY ALL JUST WAITED TILL THE END.

SO THERE WAS A LOT TO REALLY PROCESS IN THESE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS.

AND IN PARTICULAR, WE SAW, I THINK, A LITTLE BIT MORE OF AN INFLUX INTO KINDERGARTEN THAN WE'VE SEEN IN PRIOR YEARS.

BUT WE WERE ABLE TO MANAGE WITHIN CLASS GUIDELINES.

WE DID, AS A RESULT OF SOME OF THE LARGER SIZES IN KINDERGARTEN.

AND WHERE WE HAD OTHER SECTIONS THAT ARE AT, OR VERY NEAR CAPACITY, WORKED WITH DR. GARCIA'S OFFICE TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS THERE.

BE IT ASSIGNING INTERNS TO THOSE LARGER CLASSES, TA, THOSE WERE THE TYPES OF SUPPORTS THAT WE WENT TO.

ADDITIONALLY, OUR BUILDINGS, I THINK MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS, WERE ABLE TO SECURE A BUILDING SUB FOR THE YEAR.

THOSE ARE ALSO ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS THAT MANY OF THEM ARE USING STRATEGICALLY TO ASSIST WITH THE KINDERGARTENERS FOR SURE AS THEY GET USED TO THOSE ROUTINES AND LEARN HOW TO DO SCHOOL, BUT ARE USING THOSE SUPPORTS STRATEGICALLY.

OUR INTERNS, I BELIEVE, WE HAVE A FLOATING ONE AT PROSPECT HILL, WE HAVE AN INTERN IN FIFTH GRADE AT COLONIAL, AN INTERN IN THIRD GRADE AT SIWANOY, WE HAVE A TA THAT'S BEING SHARED ACROSS THE KINDERGARTEN AT SIWANOY.

>> A STUDENT-TEACHER AT [INAUDIBLE] OUTSIDE HUTCHINSON.

>> HUTCHINSON, CORRECT. THERE'S A LOT OF STUDENT-TEACHERS AROUND THE DISTRICT.

HUTCHINSON'S GOT A LOT. THOSE ARE REALLY SOME OF THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORTS THAT WE USE.

WE'RE ABLE TO SPREAD THOSE REALLY ACROSS TO BEST MEET THOSE LARGE NEEDS.

AND OF COURSE, CONTINUING TO RECRUIT, ONGOING BASIS FOR INTERNS.

OBVIOUSLY, ONCE THE SCHOOL YEAR IS UP AND RUNNING, NOT AS LIKELY THAT WE WOULD FIND THEM.

BUT THE TEAM REALLY WORKED HARD TO IDENTIFY THOSE AREAS AND TO CONTINUE TO HIRE RIGHT UP TO THE LAST MINUTE.

SO WE WERE HAPPY TO GET ALL OF THEM PROCESSED AND TO BE ABLE TO STAY WITHIN BOARD GUIDELINES.

I DID PROVIDE THE DOCUMENT TO THE BOARD EARLIER TODAY.

JUST FOR YOUR INFORMATION, WE REALLY HAD NOT DONE A LOOK-BACK ON ENROLLMENTS, FLOWS, INS AND OUTS.

WHEN WE LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE COME TO RENEW STUDENTS TO THE DISTRICT SINCE LAST YEAR, THEY REALLY SPAN ACROSS THE GRADE LEVELS.

OBVIOUSLY, KINDERGARTEN'S ARE BIGGEST INFLUX.

I THINK WHAT WE SAW THIS YEAR, THE BIGGEST INFLUX WAS NINTH GRADE, WHICH I BELIEVE I MENTIONED THAT TO THE BOARD LAST TIME WE SAW EACH OTHER AS WELL.

THAT WE GOT A LOT OF STUDENTS COMING INTO NINTH GRADE THIS YEAR THAT WERE UNANTICIPATED WHEN WE LEFT IN JUNE.

AND A LOT OF THEM WENT INTO NINE HONOR'S ENGLISH IN PARTICULAR.

[00:45:02]

WE'RE BRINGING IN SOME KIDS WHO HAVE A HIGH ACADEMIC RIGOR PROGRAM.

BECAUSE OF THAT, I DID AUTHORIZE THE ADDITIONAL SECTION, WHICH I THINK HELPED TO EASE A LOT OF PRESSURES AND GIVE THOSE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS A MUCH BETTER CLASS SIZE.

WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN 28, 29 WAS ABLE TO GO DOWN MUCH LOWER AS A RESULT.

WE DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHEN THEY'RE GOING TO COME, WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO COME, WHICH GRADE LEVELS, BUT THANKFULLY, WE WERE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THIS YEAR.

JIM IS NOT WITH US TONIGHT, BUT HE IS ALREADY PUTTING THE WORK IN PLACE TO DO OUR UPDATED DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY.

THAT IS, I WILL SAY, A ROUGH ESTIMATE.

GENERALLY, MOST OF THOSE REPORTS USE LIVE BIRTH DATA, WHICH WILL NOT EXPLAIN WHY WE GET AN INFLUX OF NINTH GRADERS.

SOME OF THE MOVE-INS AND MOVE-OUTS DON'T RELATE TO LIVE BIRTH RATES SO IT'S A ROUGH ESTIMATE, BUT IT'S DEFINITELY TIME TO GET AN UPDATED SNAPSHOT OF WHERE WE ARE.

I DO KNOW THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO INCORPORATE GENERAL TRENDS AND PATTERNS IN THE REGION.

AND I THINK BEING THAT WE'RE OUT NEIGHBORING TO NEW YORK CITY AND WHAT COVID HAS DONE FOR DEMOGRAPHIC PATTERNS, I'M SURE THEY'LL BE ABLE TO INCORPORATE ALL THAT AND GIVE US A GOOD IDEA.

THEY CAN ALSO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WE'VE GOT A FEW MORE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS ACTUALLY IN EXISTENCE NOW THAN WHEN WE DID THE DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY FIVE YEARS AGO.

AGAIN, I THINK THAT'S ANOTHER FACTOR THAT CAN GIVE US MAYBE SOME BETTER ACTUALS.

THAT'S WHERE WE ARE IN ENROLLMENTS.

TECHNICALLY, WE'LL HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF INS AND OUTS BETWEEN NOW AND WHAT WE CALL BEDS DAY.

IT'S USUALLY THE FIRST WEDNESDAY IN OCTOBER, BASIC EDUCATIONAL DATA DAY.

WE'LL REPORT TO THE STATE OUR OFFICIAL ENROLLMENTS AS OF THAT DAY, AND THAT'S GENERALLY WHAT GETS REPORTED UP TO THE STATE WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE DATA PORTALS. NEXT, A COUPLE OF EXCITING RECOGNITIONS.

I'M GOING GO TO WITH THIS ONE FIRST.

I'LL GO WITH ATHLETICS NEXT. THE ATHLETIC SEASON KICKED OFF.

FOOTBALL STARTED BACK ON AUGUST 18TH.

MOST OTHER VARSITY AND JV SPORTS STARTED AUGUST 21ST AND OUR MODIFIED PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN GETTING UP AND RUNNING IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS, THIS MONDAY BEING THE LATEST.

OVERALL, WE'VE GOT NINE DIFFERENT SPORTS RUNNING THIS SEASON.

GIRLS TENNIS, GIRL SOCCER, BOYS SOCCER, GIRLS VOLLEYBALL, CROSS-COUNTRY, CHEERLEADING, FIELD HOCKEY, FOOTBALL, AND GIRLS SWIMMING.

IN THOSE NINE SPORTS THAT REPRESENT 24 DIFFERENT TEAMS, WE HAD 678 STUDENTS COME OUT FOR ATHLETICS THIS FALL, WHICH IS HUGE, SO REALLY GREAT.

THERE WERE STILL SOME FINAL CUTS BEING MADE, BUT THAT TURNOUT IS REALLY TREMENDOUS.

YOU WOULDN'T THINK 678 STUDENTS AND WE HAVE ABOUT 1,500 IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL AND THIS IS NOT INCLUDING SIX GRADE, SO A REALLY GREAT TURNOUT.

I KNOW OUR NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR IS LEARNING THE INS AND OUTS OF SCHEDULING FIELDS IN PELHAM [LAUGHTER] WHEN YOU HAVE 24 TEAMS AND VERY LIMITED FIELD SPACE.

[LAUGHTER] IT'S BEEN AN EDUCATION FOR HIM, BUT HE'S KEEPING HIS HEAD ABOVE WATER, AND VERY MUCH KEEPING AN EYE TOWARDS FAIRNESS, INEQUITY, AND ROTATION WITH THE FIELD.

PROBABLY BE SOME LEARNING LESSONS, PROBABLY BE SOME NON-NEGOTIABLES OF WHERE TEAMS HAVE TO GO WHEN, BUT WE'RE REALLY WORKING TO SUPPORT HIM IN THAT AND LOOKING FOR A REALLY POSITIVE SEASON.

MOVING NEXT TO SOME STUDENT ACCOLADES ALREADY EARLY IN THE YEAR, BUT WE WERE EXCITED TO FIND OUT THAT THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT WAS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT US THAT TWO STUDENTS HAVE ACHIEVED THE ALLSTATE HONORS DESIGNATION LEVEL.

GRACE CAMEY IS GOING TO BE SINGING VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE, AND ANDREW SCOTT WAS SELECTED AS AN ALTERNATE FOR THE MIXED CHORUS AT ALLSTATE CHORUS.

THE ALLSTATE BANDS, CHORUS, AND ORCHESTRA, AND JAZZ ENSEMBLES ARE HONORS GROUPS THAT COMPRISE OF TOP STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENTS ACROSS NEW YORK STATE.

THOSE FIVE GROUPS ARE DIRECTED BY RENOWNED GUEST CONDUCTORS AND PERFORM AT 103 CONCERTS IN ROCHESTER AT NEW YORK EASTMAN THEATER, AN INNOVATIONS THEATER DOING THE ANNUAL NYSSMA, IT'S NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE BEEN THERE.

>> [INAUDIBLE]

>> THE SECOND S?

>> NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL.

>> THANK YOU. NEW YORK STATE SCHOOL MUSIC ASSOCIATION, I SHOULD KNOW AS A FORMER MUSIC TEACHER.

THEIR WINTER CONFERENCE IN LATE NOVEMBER OR EARLY DECEMBER DEPENDING ON THE YEAR.

DURING THE CONFERENCE, REHEARSALS TAKE PLACE THROUGHOUT THE EVENT FOR STUDENTS.

TO BE EVEN CONSIDERED FOR THIS, I'LL SAY THE EXPERIENCE BEGINS WITH STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS PREPARING FOR NYSSMA LEVEL 6 SOLOS AT THE TOP LEVEL AS A STUDENT.

THEY PREPARE PERFORMANCE LEVEL 6 SOLO,

[00:50:03]

WHICH MUST BE SELECTED FROM A SPECIFIC REPERTOIRE LIST IN THE CURRENT NYSSMA MANUAL.

OVER 6,500 SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS FROM ACROSS THE STATE PREPARE TO COMPETE AT THE ALLSTATE LEVEL, AND FROM THAT POOL, ONLY 600 ARE SELECTED TO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE.

WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF GRACE AND ANDREW BEING SELECTED TO REPRESENT PELHAM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL THIS WINTER.

THANKS TO THEIR TEACHERS FOR THE WORK THEY'VE DONE TO PREPARE THEM, WE'VE GOT INCREDIBLE PROGRAMS AND WE'RE ALWAYS PRODUCING STUDENTS WHO ARE BEING SELECTED AT THAT LEVEL.

ANOTHER EXCITING HONOR THAT WE WANTED TO RAISE TONIGHT IS WE'RE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT FOUR PELHAM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS HAVE EARNED RECOGNITION AS NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS.

IT'S BY THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP CORPORATION.

THOSE STUDENTS ARE JAMES BLACKBURN, BENJAMIN KOFF, BROOKE LUCE, AND PADRAIG PEARLMAN.

THEY'RE AMONG MORE THAN 1,600 STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO BE NAMED SEMI-FINALISTS BY SCORING AMONG THE HIGHEST ON THEIR RESPECTIVE STATES ON THE PSAT NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFYING TESTS LAST YEAR.

I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THEY NOW HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE NAMED AS NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS AND EARN A CHANCE TO RECEIVE ONE OF 7,250 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS, TOTALING UP TO $28 MILLION IN THE SPRING.

REALLY EXCITED FOR THEM.

WE'RE GOING TO BE INVITING ALL SIX OF THESE STUDENTS TO BE HONORED AT OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING.

WE'RE HOPING THAT THERE'LL BE ABLE TO MAKE THIS SO YOU CAN MEET THEM IN PERSON IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THEM AND CELEBRATE THEIR SUCCESS.

MOVING INTO A COUPLE OTHER ITEMS TONIGHT, OUR CLUBS ARE ALL UP AND RUNNING, SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT AS WELL.

YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF APPROVALS TONIGHT FOR VARIOUS STIPENDS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

WE'RE APPRECIATIVE TO OUR FACULTY WHO STEPPED FORWARD AND WILLING TO RUN PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING THAT KIDS WANT.

THEY CAN GENERALLY FIND SOMEONE WHO IS WILLING TO RUN A CLUB FOR THEM, SO WE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO GET OUT AND TO JOIN THOSE.

ONE THING THAT'S UPCOMING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE AN EXCITING FOR A WEEK, WHAT MR. BROOK WATTS HAS PLANNED THIS YEAR, A HOMECOMING IS SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 13TH.

THEY HAVE A WHOLE WEEK OF EVENTS, AND DURING THAT WEEK THERE'S GOING TO BE A CLUB FAIR SO THAT THE STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THE FRESHMEN IN PARTICULAR WHO ARE NEW TO THE SCHOOL, SEE ALL THE DIFFERENT CLUBS THAT ARE RUNNING, GET THE CHANCE TO MEET OTHER KIDS WHO WERE IN THE CLUBS, FIND CLUBS OF INTERESTS AND AS YOU KNOW, THAT'S ONE OF OUR GOALS IS TO GET ALL KIDS CONNECTED TO SOMETHING.

THE CLUB FAIR WILL BE THAT WEEK, AS WELL AS A NEW COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR.

THAT'S ANOTHER PIECE OF, AGAIN, TRYING TO MAKE THE COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT FOR OUR STUDENTS.

WE VALUE SERVICE OBVIOUSLY, AS A DISTRICT, THERE'S A BOARD REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION FOR 40 HOURS OF SERVICE.

WE WANT IT TO BE A MEANINGFUL SERVICE.

HE'S REACHED OUT TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, MANY OF THAT WHICH WERE ON THE SCREEN UP THERE A LITTLE FEW MINUTES AGO, AND REPRESENTATIVES WILL BECOMING INTO NOW HAVE COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR AS WELL, SIMILARLY MODELED SIMILARLY TO THAT.

WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND HOPE STUDENTS WILL GET CONNECTED.

A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS THAT ARE GETTING UP AND RUNNING ARE EXTENDED ACADEMIES, WHICH ARE EXTENDED EXTRA HELP SESSIONS FOR STUDENTS IN NEED SPONSORED THROUGH THE CIVICS.

THOSE ARE GETTING UP AND RUNNING AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL, SO EXCITED THAT WORD IS GETTING OUT TO TEACHERS TO SET THOSE UP.

I SPOKE ALSO WITH DR. FITZGERALD TODAY AND SHE'S WORKING TOWARDS GETTING SOMETHING SET UP AT THE ELEMENTARY AS WELL.

I'M WAITING FOR THE STATE ASSESSMENT SCORES TO COME THROUGH SO THEY CAN MAKE SURE TO IDENTIFY THOSE STUDENTS IN NEED, SO WE'RE HAPPY TO GET THOSE OPPORTUNITIES UP AND RUNNING. I KNOW DR.

BOWMAN, SORRY IF I'M STEALING SOME THUNDER HERE TOO, AND A QUESTION WAS ASKED ABOUT THE MATH DROP-IN.

AGAIN, OUR PLANS ARE TO BRING THAT BACK SINCE WE'RE JUST NOW GETTING SCHOOL UP AND RUNNING.

THERE'S OUTREACH TO TRY TO GET THAT ESTABLISHED FOR STUDENTS.

WE FELT THAT WAS VALUABLE FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DID PARTICIPATE. DID YOU WANT TO ADD SOMETHING?

>> DR. [INAUDIBLE] HAS ALREADY REACHED OUT TO A NUMBER OF HIS TEACHERS AND HE'S JUST TRYING TO GET FOUR DAYS COVERAGE.

HE'S CURRENTLY SOLID WITH TODAY'S COVERAGE, AND SO PROBABLY MY NEXT BOARD REPORT WILL HAVE THE DETAILS.

>> GREAT. WE'RE AGAIN TRYING TO GET THOSE PROGRAMS UP AND RUNNING FOR OUR STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE EARLY INTERVENTIONS AS NEEDED.

[NOISE] ON TONIGHT'S AGENDA, THE BOARD WILL SEE OUR FIRST SCHOOL CULTURE COACHES ARE BEING APPROVED.

WE HAVE FOLKS THAT HAVE STEPPED FORWARD IN EVERY BUILDING.

I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

IT'S A GREAT TEAM OF FOLKS WHO HAVE BEEN COMMITTED TO THIS WORK AND ARE GOING TO BE GREAT AMBASSADORS.

I'LL BE WORKING WITH BOTH THE CULTURAL COMPETENCE COMMITTEE AS WELL AS CARRYING ANY OF THAT LEARNING AND TRAINING BACK TO THE BUILDING LEVEL AND BEING A GREAT SUPPORT AS WE WORK TOO.

THIS YEAR, MY HOPE IS TO DELVE A LITTLE BIT DEEPER INTO THE NEW YORK STATE FRAMEWORK, THE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE AND SUSTAINING EDUCATION FRAMEWORK IN THOSE AREAS THAT ALIGN WITH OUR GOALS, WHICH HAVE TO DO WITH WELCOMING AND AFFIRMING ENVIRONMENT, WHICH ALIGNS WITH OUR GOAL AROUND BUILDING TRUST AND A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ALL STUDENTS, AND ALSO THE PRONG THAT DEALS WITH HIGH EXPECTATIONS, WHICH WILL CONNECT VERY WELL WITH OUR ACADEMIC GOALS AS WELL.

[00:55:01]

MORE TO COME THERE, AND I THANK THEM IN ADVANCE FOR STEPPING FORWARD INTO THIS NEW ROLE.

TOMORROW, JIM WE'RE HOPING TO BE BACK.

WE HAVE OUR FIRST SAFETY MEETING WITH OUR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE DEPARTMENTS.

WE DO THAT EVERY YEAR. WE USUALLY MEET A COUPLE OF TIMES WITH OUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT JUST TO REALLY STRENGTHEN TIES, KEEP LINES OF COMMUNICATION OPEN, MAKE SURE THAT PLANS ARE TIGHT AND OUR COMMUNICATION IS TIGHT WITH THEM.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO BE MEETING WITH THEM AND APPRECIATE THEIR TIME AND THE RESOURCES THAT THEY DEVOTE TO OUR SCHOOLS.

I KNOW JIM IS LOOKING TO AS HE OVERSEES THE SAFETY AND SECURITY EFFORTS AND THE DISTRICT IS ALREADY WORKING WITH TOM DRAKE WHO IS NOW WITH US FULL-TIME, HE'S OUR ALTARIS CONSULTANT, TO GET HIM OUT INTO THE BUILDINGS, WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPALS, WITH FACULTY SOONER AND MORE OFTEN, SO WE CAN GET BETTER AT OUR DRILLS, COME IN, REALLY MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IS KEEPING SAFETY AND SECURITY AT THE FOREFRONT OF THEIR MINDS.

TONIGHT, I AM ALSO GOING TO BE PRESENTING THE FACILITIES UP-TO-DATE ON JIM'S BEHALF AND THEN WE'LL GO INTO GOALS.

I THINK I HIT EVERYTHING IN MY REPORT THAT I WANTED TO HIT BEFORE GOING INTO THOSE, SO MAYBE I'LL PAUSE FOR A MINUTE.

LET'S SEE IF THERE ANY QUESTIONS ON ANYTHING THAT IS SHARED THERE OR OTHER THINGS.

>> SO YOU'RE GOING INTO FACILITIES? [OVERLAPPING]

>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS THINKING BECAUSE IS [OVERLAPPING] COROLLARY TO THIS.

>> ACTUALLY I HAVE ONE THING. NOT A QUESTION, BUT JUST SOMETHING TO SAY.

>> SURE.

>> LAST SATURDAY I HAD THE CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN GOVERNANCE TRAINING, WHICH ALL OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS HAVE TO DO, AND IT WAS GREAT.

I WAS THERE PROBABLY WITH ABOUT 30 PLUS OTHER NEW BOARD MEMBERS FROM AROUND THE AREA, AND DURING THE TRAINING, IT CONFIRMED WHAT I ALREADY KNOW AND WE ALREADY KNOW, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT SCHOOL DISTRICT.

WE KNOW THAT. BUT WHAT IT SHOWED ME WAS THAT THIS IS A REALLY WELL-MANAGED SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH A VERY COMMITTED GROUP OF ADMINISTRATORS.

I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT OUT LOUD BECAUSE IT WAS CLEAR IN SPEAKING WITH EVERYONE AND BEING A PART OF THE TRAINING HOW SMOOTHLY THINGS ARE RUN HERE AND JUST HOW FORTUNATE WE ARE TO BE A PART OF JUST A WELL-MANAGED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT.

>> THANK YOU. [LAUGHTER] IT'S A TEAM EFFORT FOR SURE.

>> YES.

>> DEFINITELY. THANK YOU, EMMA, I APPRECIATE THAT.

I'M GOING TO GRAB THAT CLICKER AND ACTUALLY COME BACK OVER HERE FOR THIS PRESENTATION.

[3.5 Assistant Superintendent's Update on Finance and Facilities]

>> [BACKGROUND]

>> I KNOW THE BOARD HAD A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR THE FACILITIES.

WE ALL GOT TO TOUR THE FACILITIES TOGETHER LAST WEEK, AND I THINK IAN MURRAY DISCOVERED WE'RE ONE OF THE FEW DISTRICTS THAT DOES IT THAT WAY AND THAT DOES IT IN SOME CASES AT ALL.

[LAUGHTER] HOWEVER, REALLY IT'S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO HIGHLIGHT THE INCREDIBLE WORK OF OUR FACILITY STAFF.

WE HAVE SUCH TALENTED PEOPLE, I'VE SAID IT BEFORE AND I'M SO SORRY IF I'M REPEATING MYSELF. I STILL REMEMBER.

I THINK IT WAS WHEN I WAS COMING TO INTERVIEW AND EVEN MY FIRST DAY HERE, THE FIRST PEOPLE I MET WALKING IN THE DOORS OF OUR BUILDINGS WAS OUR CUSTODIAL STAFF, AND THEY WERE INCREDIBLE, THEY WERE THE KINDEST, MOST HELPFUL, RESPONSIVE, JUST REALLY TOP-NOTCH PROFESSIONALS.

WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THE WORK THAT THEY DO.

AS GOOD PEOPLE, THEY'RE WONDERFUL IN THAT SERVICE SENSE, INCREDIBLY TALENTED TOO.

SO MUCH OF THE WORK THAT WE HAVE THAT MAKES OUR FACILITIES WHAT THEY ARE REALLY, IT IS ALL BECAUSE OF THEM.

I KNOW BOTH JIM AND JOHN ARE NOT ABLE TO BE WITH US TONIGHT, BUT I APPRECIATE THEIR LEADERSHIP IN THE DEPARTMENT AS WELL AND WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT THIS SUMMER THANKS TO THE WORK OF THIS ENTIRE TEAM.

JUST STARTING QUICKLY WITH THE [INAUDIBLE] OVERVIEW.

EVERY SUMMER WE DO ANNUAL MAINTENANCE ON THE TURF FIELDS.

OBVIOUSLY, WE HAVE A LOT MORE TURF NOW.

WE HAVE VENDORS WHO COME IN AND DO A DEEP CLEAN OF OUR FIELDS.

IT'S AMAZING THE THINGS THEY PULL OUT OF THAT, YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW THE THINGS THEY PULL OUT OF IT.

BUT DEEP CLEAN OF THE FIELD SO THEY ARE READY TO GO.

OUR FACILITY STAFF THIS SUMMER ALSO TESTED ALL OF OUR SCOREBOARDS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY WERE ALL UP AND FUNCTIONING PROPERLY BECAUSE WE'VE HAD SOME ISSUES WITH THAT IN THE PAST.

WHAT FINALLY I WAS THRILLED TO SEE WHEN JOHN SENT ME THIS PHOTO AT LONG LAST, MANY OF YOU MAY REMEMBER A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN ANTHONY SENERCHIA PASSED AWAY, A LONG-STANDING COMMUNITY RESIDENT WHO REALLY MEANT A LOT TO THE STUDENTS, THE FOOTBALL PROGRAMS IN PARTICULAR,

[01:00:04]

BUT A LOT OF THE YOUTH OF THE COMMUNITY.

HE PASSED FROM ALS.

WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO INSTALL A PLAQUE IN HIS HONOR, WHICH EXPLAINS WHO HE WAS SO THAT GENERATIONS BEYOND US WILL REMEMBER WHO HE WAS AND ALSO EXPLAINS THE 44 THAT'S EMBLAZONED ON OUR TURF FIELD NOW, AND THAT'S HIS NUMBER, AND THAT WAS AN HONOR THAT WAS DESIGNATED BACK THEN.

WE'RE THRILLED TO FINALLY BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT PLAQUE IN PLACE AS WE START THE NEW SPORTS SEASON.

SOMETHING MANY FOLKS DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE WAS HAPPENING, THE CLOCK AT THE TOP OF THE CLOCK TOWER WASN'T WORKING.

THIS SUMMER, OUR FACILITIES FOLKS GOT THAT REPAIRED FOR US TOO.

I KNOW EVERYONE'S GOT THEIR SMARTPHONE SO THAT THEY MAKE THE TRAIN ON TIME, BUT THE CLOCK TOWER IS ACTUALLY WORKING AND RUNNING ON TIME NOW, SO THAT'S A NICE LITTLE DETAIL.

IT IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES OUR BUILDINGS SO SPECIAL.

ALSO, WITHIN THE SCHOOL THIS SUMMER [NOISE] AND THIS IS ALL PART AND PARCEL OF CONCLUDING THE UPGRADES AND CHANGES RELATED TO OUR 2018 BOND PROJECTS, OUR FACILITY STAFF TOOK WHAT USED TO BE THE BRIDGE ROOM, IT WAS A CLASSROOM ON THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE HIGH SCHOOL THAT HAD BEEN SEPARATED OFF WITH A COUPLE OF OFFICES FOR THE BRIDGE STAFF.

I KNOW THE BOARD KNOWS BRIDGES ARE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL.

SINCE WE'VE RELOCATED BRIDGE TOWARD THE NEW SPACES, THEY WERE ABLE TO RENOVATE THAT SPACE BACK INTO A FULL-SIZE, VERY LARGE CLASSROOM, ALL BY HAND.

IT WAS REFINISHED THE FLOORS, PAINT, PATCHED UP THE CEILING, SO IT HAD A GOOD DROP CEILING ALREADY, BUT TO EXTEND IT OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE, PATCHED UP THE WALLS, AND REALLY DRESSED THAT ROOM UP TO BE AN OUTSTANDING ROOM, AND WE ACTUALLY WERE ABLE TO REPURPOSE SOME OF THE OLD ART TABLES INTO THE SPACE SO THAT THERE'S NOW COLLABORATIVE TABLE SPACES IN THERE FOR THE WORK THAT WILL BE HAPPENING IN THAT CLASS, AND IT'S AIR CONDITIONED, SO THOSE STUDENTS WHO WOUND UP THERE REALLY BENEFITED FROM THAT.

MOVING INTO THE CAFETERIA AREA, WE CONTINUE WITH THE EXPANSION OF OUR LED LIGHT PROJECT, WHICH IS RELATED TO SHIFT ALL OF OUR LIGHTS DISTRICT-WIDE TO LED OVER TIME.

THAT WORK WAS DONE IN CAFETERIAS A AND B, THOSE ARE THE SMALLER AREAS OF THE CAFETERIA.

CAFETERIA C IS THE BIG ONE, WITH ALL THE FLAGS AND ALL THE, THAT'S THE BIG AREA.

A IS THE ONE CLOSEST TO FRANKLIN, AND B IS A LITTLE ALCOVE BEFORE YOU GO OUT THE DOOR TO THE COURTYARD AREA.

CEILING LIGHTS WERE REPLACED THERE, THOSE AREAS WERE ALSO PAINTED.

THE SERVING AREA WAS ALSO PAINTED AND BRIGHTENED UP AS WELL, WHICH WE GOT TO SEE ON OPENING DAY WHEN STAFF CAME FOR LUNCH, IT WAS REALLY EXCITING.

THANKS TO WANDA AND HER TEAM FOR PUTTING ON A FESTIVE BEACH-THEMED LUNCH FOR US ON OUR OPENING SUPERINTENDENT'S CONFERENCE DAY.

BEFORE WE GO ONTO THOSE.

A COUPLE OF OTHER ITEMS, WE DON'T HAVE PHOTOS OF EVERYTHING, BUT I DID WANT TO HIGHLIGHT AS PART OF THE BOND PROJECT COMPLETION, AND I KNOW THE BOARD SAW THIS.

THE AREA THAT USED TO BE MY OFFICE HAS NOW BEEN CONVERTED INTO THE NEW BRIDGE SPACE AND AN ADDITIONAL ART ROOM.

WE WERE EXCITED TO FINISH THOSE OFF AND HAVE THOSE FULLY FURNISHED AND NOW THEY'RE UP AND RUNNING.

I'VE SEEN IT WITHIN THE ART ROOM, WE HAVE AN OFFICE SPACE FOR THE TEACHER, AND A FINALLY APPROPRIATE SPACE TO STORE ALL OF THEIR EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES.

WITH THE NEW BRIDGE ROOM, WE ACTUALLY PRESERVE THE KITCHENETTE, SO THAT THAT PROGRAM NOW IS REALLY A HOMEBASE, WHICH IS A LOT OF THE THINKING AND PHILOSOPHY BEHIND IT, IS TO GIVE STUDENTS A PLACE WHERE THEY REALLY BELONG.

ADDITIONALLY, WE'RE ABLE TO PRESERVE THE BATHROOMS THAT WERE IN THERE.

ONE IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE BRIDGE PROGRAM DIRECTLY, SINGLE-USER BATHROOMS, THE OTHER ONE IS NOW ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE, ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF, SINGLE-USER BATHROOM, ALL GENDER BATHROOM THAT IS NOW CONNECTED TO THE HALLWAY.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO ADD THAT, THAT WAS ONE PIECE THAT I KNOW MANY OF YOU KNOW, WE'VE STRUGGLED WITH THE NUMBER OF BATHROOMS IN THE BUILDING BEING OLD BUILDINGS, AND CERTAINLY ONES THAT WERE SINGLE-USER PRIVATE BATHROOMS. WE'RE HAPPY TO ADD THAT INTO THE MIX.

RELATED TO THAT, THE BOARD GOT TO SEE THESE AS WELL.

YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT WHAT USED TO BE THE CURRICULUM AND SPECIAL ED OFFICES WERE ALSO CONVERTED INTO ART CLASSROOMS. OUR FIRST ITERATION DUE TO VALUE ENGINEERING DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH PSEUDO CASEWORK, SO WE FINALLY GOT THE CASEWORK THAT WE'VE NEEDED IN THOSE CLASSROOMS. THEY FINALLY HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED, AND AGAIN, THAT WAS GAME-CHANGING DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU WALK IN AND LOOK AT THE SPACE THAT'S NOW AVAILABLE FOR INSTRUCTION FOR STUDENTS TO MOVE, GOD BLESS YOU, AND FOR STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW FUNCTIONALITY THERE.

YOU GET NEW FURNITURE INSTALLED INTO ALL THOSE THREE ART ROOMS. ADDITIONALLY, SORRY, I DON'T HAVE PICTURES, BUT WE DID FRESH COAT OF PAINT ON STAIRS IN THE BLEACHERS AND THE BLUE GYM AND THE RAMP LEADING TO IT.

ALSO ADDED SOME NEW LIGHTING AND TV MONITORS IN ROOM 220,

[01:05:05]

WHICH IS ACTUALLY AN OFFICE SPACE THAT IS NOW GOING TO SERVE AS OUR SECURITY HUB FOR THE DISTRICT.

ON THOSE MONITORS WILL BE THE VIDEO SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM ALL SIX OF THE SCHOOLS.

ELEMENTARIES WOULD BE ON EACH SCREEN, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, SO THAT TOM DRAKE OUR TERRORIST CONSULTANT AND JO JOHNSON WOULD BE SHARING THAT SPACE SO WE CAN GET A LITTLE BIT MORE DIRECT OVERVIEW OF THOSE.

WE DO ANTICIPATE BUILDING THAT OUT EVEN MORE ONCE WE ARE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT THE GRANT FROM CENTER [INAUDIBLE], THE SAFETY GRANT THAT WE RECEIVED.

IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE OVER THE NEXT YEAR OR SO, BUT WE'LL BE ABLE TO BUILD OUT THOSE CAMERAS AND REALLY MAKE THAT AN EVEN MORE USEFUL SECURITY HUB.

ADDITIONAL PAINTING WAS DONE IN ROOM 063 AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

STAIRWELLS WERE PAINTED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.

SPOT PAINTING WAS DONE ALL AROUND THE BUILDING AS WELL.

YOU SEE HERE JUST SOME PICTURES.

I THINK IT'S ALWAYS JUST IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT OUR CUSTODIANS GO THROUGH EVERY SINGLE ROOM.

THEY TAKE A PICTURE FIRST, THEY TAKE EVERYTHING OUT, THEY CLEAN IT TOP TO BOTTOM, INCLUDING STRIPPING AND RE-WAXING FLOORS, AND LOAD IT ALL BACK IN SO IT LOOKS JUST THE WAY IT DID WHEN TEACHERS LEFT, WHICH IS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF WORK.

THERE'S SOME PHOTOS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL CLEANING AND THEN SUMMER MIDDLE SCHOOL CLEANING.

THE FLOORS ARE LIKE GLASS, LIKE MIRROR.

I WILL SAY WHEN WE WERE COMING AROUND IN THE TOUR, I THOUGHT IT WAS SO FASCINATING TO FIND OUT THAT THERE WAS NO SINGLE DAY, I THINK THAT'S WHAT KENNEDY TOLD US, OUR HEAD CUSTODIAN, IN PELHAM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL THIS SUMMER THAT IT WAS COMPLETELY EMPTY.

THERE WERE STUDENTS SOMEWHERE IN THE BUILDING EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE SUMMER AND YET OUR FOLKS WERE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THIS INCREDIBLE TASK.

SO WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THEM.

TWO MORE ITEMS JUST ABOUT THE SECONDARY CAMPUS, AND THE BOARD ASKED ABOUT THIS ON OUR TOUR.

HVAC UNIT REPLACEMENT IS IN PROCESS.

THAT WAS FROM THE CAPITAL EXPENDITURES THAT WE BUILT IN THE PAST BUDGET.

THE ARCHITECT IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON PLANS FOR THAT.

THEY'RE WORKING WITH THE VENDOR ON SPECS.

IT WILL NEED TO BE NAVIGATED THROUGH THE STATE ED BUILDINGS APPROVAL PRE-PLANNED.

UNFORTUNATELY, THEY NO LONGER HAVE THEIR THIRD-PARTY EXPEDITED REVIEW PROCESS, SO IT'S GOING TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE REGULAR PROCESS.

WE DO ANTICIPATE THAT WE'LL TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME AND THEN GETTING ALL THE SUPPLIES AND THINGS ON SITE.

WE FORESEE THAT THAT WILL TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF LEAD TIME AS WELL, SO WE'RE ANTICIPATING THE WORK TO BE DONE THE SUMMER OF 2025.

IT'S WAYS OUT, BUT THAT'S HOW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION WORKS.

WE'RE APPRECIATIVE THAT THE BOARD BUILT THAT INTO THE BUDGET AND THAT THE COMMUNITY APPROVED THAT SO WE CAN START IN THAT PROCESS, AND WE WILL MAINTAIN THOSE UNITS UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THEY ARE REPLACED.

FINALLY, FOR THE SECONDARY CAMPUS, WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO BE COORDINATING WITH FRIENDS OF PELHAM SPORTS AND RENOVATE UPCOMING RENOVATIONS OF THE FITNESS AND WEIGHT ROOMS. CERTAINLY, WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO COORDINATE AGAIN.

THEY ARE ALREADY COORDINATING WITH THE ARCHITECT WHO IS DOING THE WORK FOR THEM PRO BONO ON THIS, AND WILL BE WORKING WITH PROJECT MANAGER, THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, AND BUILDING PRINCIPAL TO FINALIZE PLANS AND TO COORDINATE USE OF THE SPACE BECAUSE WE DO USE THOSE SPACES, ESPECIALLY THE FITNESS ROOM FOR OUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES.

SO WE'LL WORK THROUGH THE LOGISTICS OF THAT AND WE'LL LOOK FORWARD ONCE THE PROJECT IS DONE FOR THIS TO BE A PROJECT THAT BENEFITS ALL STUDENTS, AND WE'LL BE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO OPEN THAT, MAKE THAT SPACE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS.

WE'RE VERY APPRECIATIVE OF THE FRIENDS OF PELHAM FOR THEIR GENEROUS DONATIONS AND THE VISION THAT THEY HAVE FOR THIS AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO THAT PROJECT.

MOVING THROUGH THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, I KNOW BOARD, WE HAD SOME CONVERSATION ABOUT THIS CORNER.

IT LOOKS MUCH NICER NOW.

THESE ARE IN-PROCESS PHOTOS.

VERY HAPPY TO HAVE COMPLETED THE WORK ON THE CORNER OF HUTCHINSON.

WE WERE ABLE TO REMOVE THAT OLD SLATE, VERY OLD ROUGH RETAINING WALL, AND REPLACE IT WITH REALLY A BEAUTIFUL RETAINING WALL THAT JIM AND I SAID EARLIER TODAY, WILL OUTLAST BOTH OF US.

AND REDID THE SIDEWALK WHICH IS NOW SMOOTH, SPACIOUS, AND BEAUTIFUL.

THE VILLAGE ACTUALLY REPAVED THE STREET RIGHT NEXT TO IT.

IT'S A REALLY NICE LOOK AND WHEN I DROVE BY THE OTHER DAY, THEY ACTUALLY HAD STRIPED IT OUT IN A WAY THAT I THINK WILL REPLICATE WHAT USED TO BE THERE WITH THE BOLLARDS TO TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S ENOUGH EASEMENT THERE.

OF COURSE, OUR STAIRS OPENED OFF OF LINCOLN AS WELL.

THERE'S STILL SOME COUPLE OF PUNCH ITEMS THAT HAVE TO BE DONE ON THOSE STAIRS, BUT THEY'RE ACCESSIBLE AND SAFE AND WE'RE THRILLED TO HAVE THOSE OPEN FOR OUR FAMILIES TO USE GOING FORWARD.

OF COURSE, SECOND TRY WORKS THIS TIME, SO HERE'S OUR NEW HUTCHINSON PLAYGROUND.

AGAIN, IT'S A LITTLE BIT IN PROCESS ON THE LEFT, BUT OUR KIDS ARE ON IT AND ENJOYING IT.

REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE THAT IN PLACE.

ONE THING I WILL NOTE, ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR IS THE FRONT OF THIS DARK GREEN POURED-IN-PLACE SURFACE, IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF A LEDGE ON ONE STEP IN ONE AREA,

[01:10:03]

SO WE WILL BE INSTALLING FENCING THERE TO TRY TO AVOID ACCIDENTS AS STUDENTS, BECAUSE IT DOES CHANGE LEVELS A LITTLE BIT.

WE DON'T WANT BROKEN ANKLES AND WRISTS AND LOST TEETH AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

WE ALSO ARE LOOKING FOR SOME FENCING ADJUSTMENTS TO BE MADE TO ACCOMMODATE AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM, WHICH AGAIN, ON OUR BOARD TOUR, WE LOOKED AT THAT SPACE.

MOVING TO SIWANOY.

WE ALL DO LOVE TREES SO THIS KILLED US TO HAVE TO DO IT.

BUT THIS IS WHY WE HAVE AN ARBORIST ON CONSULTING AND THAT IS ALMSTEAD.

WE DID HAVE TO TAKE DOWN A COUPLE OF REALLY LARGE OLD BEAUTIFUL TREES ON FRONT OF SIWANOY, AND I THINK ONE BEHIND.

THAT WAS AGAIN ON-DEVICE OF THE ARBORIST WHO MONITOR OUR TREES ON AN ANNUAL BASIS.

WE DID DO SOME LIGHTNING OF BRANCHES ON SOME OF THE OTHER TREES AS WELL.

ANYTHING THAT WAS TAKEN DOWN, WE WILL BE REPLANTING EITHER LATER THIS FALL OR IN THE SPRING BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE KEEP THE NATURE, THE LOOK OF THAT PROPERTY, AND WE REALLY ENJOYED THE SHADES.

SO I DON'T KNOW IF ANY OF US WILL BE HERE FOR THEM TO GET THAT BIG AGAIN, BUT WE'LL PLANT THEM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION TO ENJOY.

ALSO, LITTLE BIT OF AN AERIAL SHOT; SIWANOY.

WE WERE ABLE TO INSTALL THEIR NEW BIG KID PLAY SET AND WHEN WENT DOWN THERE THE OTHER NIGHT, I COULD TELL THAT MR. JOHNSON WAS THE ONE WHO PICKED IT OUT BECAUSE IT REALLY FELT LIKE MORE ADULT SIZE IN A COUPLE OF SPOTS.

NO, I'M KIDDING. THE KIDS, I'M SURE THEY'RE ALREADY REALLY ENJOYING IT.

SO NEW PLACE SET THERE AND THAT WAS POURED IN PLACE RIGHT BEFORE THE START OF SCHOOL, SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THERE'S LITTLE KIDS SET WILL BE COMING PROBABLY IN THE SPRING.

IT HAS BEEN ORDERED, BUT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WE GET BACK INTO GOOD WEATHER SO WE CAN DO THE POURED-IN-PLACE FOUNDATION TO THAT.

BUT REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.

THANK YOU TO THE SIWANOY FAMILIES AND STUDENTS WHO ENDURED THE BROKEN SLIDE THAT WE HEARD LOTS AND LOTS ABOUT LAST YEAR.

WE'RE SO GLAD TO FINALLY GET A PLACE, A FULL SET BACK UP, AND GOING FOR THE KIDS SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THEM ENJOYING THAT.

MR. JOHNSON IS ACTUALLY PLANNING A LITTLE RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY TOMORROW AT THEIR BACK-TO-SCHOOL PICNIC, AND HE WANTED ME TO EXTEND THE INVITE TO ANY BOARD MEMBERS TO COME 5:30 TOMORROW AT SIWANOY.

YOU'RE VERY WELCOME TO COME JOIN THE RIBBON-CUTTING.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU'RE COMING SO I CAN LET MR. JOHNSON KNOW TOO.

A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS FROM SIWANOY.

LOTS OF HANDIWORK THERE.

LOTS OF PAINTING.

THE ART HALLWAY, ROOM 104, THE CLOSET IN ROOM 2, KINDERGARTEN ENTRANCE AND LOBBY, KINDERGARTEN BATHROOM, STAIRCASE SPINDLES AND BASEBOARDS, THE GYM LOBBY, FRONT ENTRANCE, THE EAST FRONT ENTRANCE.

ENTRANCE FACULTY BATHROOM WAS PAINTED AND INSTALLED NEW MIRROR, SO LOTS OF PAINTING AND GOING AROUND THERE TO FRESHEN THINGS UP.

SOME NEW TILE AND REPAIRED TILE IN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT ROOMS. NEW SINK WITH A HANDS-FREE FAUCET IN THE NURSE'S OFFICE, WHICH I THINK WE'VE ALL FOUND TO BE VERY HELPFUL IN POST-COVID ENVIRONMENT.

THINGS LIKE REPAIR DOOR JAMS ARE SOME OF THOSE LOW-LEVEL BUT IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU NEED.

ONE INTERESTING THING, THROUGH THE HANDEDNESS OF TOM, THE HEAD CUSTODIAN, HE BUILT AN EMERGENCY LADDER FOR ONE OF THE KINDERGARTEN ROOMS, WHICH WAS NOT THERE BEFORE, SO THAT HE'S REALLY STURDY, FITS RIGHT IN, AND HAS MADE THAT ROOM SAFER FOR OUR STUDENTS.

FINALLY, DUE TO THE INCREASED ENROLLMENT IN THE BUILDING, WE NEEDED TO TURN THE MAKERSPACE INTO AN ACTUAL CLASSROOM THIS YEAR.

THAT WAS A LOT OF FACELIFT, INSTALLATION OF WHITEBOARDS, CREATION OF A COAT RACK, THINGS LIKE THAT TO REALLY OUTFIT IT APPROPRIATELY FOR CLASSROOM.

THANKS TO TOM FOR THE WORK THAT HE DID THERE.

TURNING TO PROSPECT HILL, THE BIGGEST PROJECT WE DID THERE THIS SUMMER WAS ON THE SECOND FLOOR TO ABATE AND REPLACE THE TILE ON THE SECOND FLOOR.

BEING THE AGE OF THE BUILDING, WE KNOW THAT THE MASTIC THAT HOLDS THOSE TILES IN PLACE GENERALLY HAS SOME ASBESTOS IN IT, SO RIGHT WHEN SCHOOL LED OUT, THAT PROJECT STARTED SO WE CAN GET IT ABATED AND GET THE WORK GOING THERE.

IT'S A NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE.

IT BRIGHTENS THE WHOLE PLACE UP.

ADDITIONALLY, PORTIONS OF THE WALLS WERE REPAIRED AND REPAINTED.

SOME OF THE RADIATOR COVERS WERE REPAINTED ON THE SECOND FLOOR SO IT'S GOT A REALLY NICE LIGHT, CONSISTENT LOOK IN FRESHENED UP LOOK TO THE SECOND FLOOR.

THAT LOOK WILL BE TRANSITIONED TO THE OTHER FLOORS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF SUMMERS.

ON THE FIRST FLOOR, A COUPLE OF CLASSROOMS WERE PAINTED AND RECEIVED SOME NEW DROP CEILINGS AND LED LIGHTS.

ADDITIONAL PAINTING WAS DONE IN THE GRAND ENTRANCE AND SOME OF THE MAIN HALLWAYS TO BRIGHTEN UP THE ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL AS WELL.

NEW DROP CEILING AND LED LIGHTS IN CLASSROOM 13.

THIS WAS VERY EXCITING TO JOHN WHEN I TALKED TO HIM; THE BOILER ROOM WAS POWER-WASHED AND PAINTED.

IF YOU WANT TO COME ON A TOUR OF THAT, LET US KNOW.

WE WILL HAPPILY SHOW YOU.

BUT FOR HIM, THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY A REALLY KEY PIECE OF THE BUILDING'S FUNCTIONING.

JUST FUNNY THE THINGS THAT DRAW INTEREST FROM ALL OF US.

FINALLY, JUST THINGS LIKE MULCHINGS AND DRESSING UP THE PLAYGROUND AREAS OUTSIDE.

[01:15:04]

WE WILL BE SEALING THE BLACKTOP LATER IN THE FALL.

WE HAD HOPED THAT THAT WOULD GET DONE BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED BECAUSE THERE'S SOME STENCILING THROUGH A GRANT FROM PEF THAT'S INTENDED TO GO THERE, BUT THE CONTRACTORS AGAIN, COULD NOT GET HERE IN TIME TO HAVE THAT READY FOR THE START OF SCHOOL..WE'VE DELAYED THAT INTO A LITTLE BIT INTO THE FALL, BUT THAT IS STILL FORTHCOMING.

FINALLY, I DON'T HAVE ANY PICTURES OF COLONIAL.

I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT, BUT THERE ARE NO MAJOR PROJECTS, BUT WE DID HAVE SOME NEW WINDOW SHADES INSTALLED ON THE BIG, BEAUTIFUL WINDOWS AT THE ENDS OF THE HALLWAYS, NEW AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM INSTALLED IN THE LIBRARY BY OUR IN-HOUSE STAFF, THE SAME GENERAL DEEP CLEANING AND ATTENTION AS THE OTHER SCHOOLS GOT.

I DO WANT TO REITERATE, ALL CLASSROOMS DISTRICT-WIDE WERE CLEANED, AND THIS GOES TO OUR LAST SLIDE. THEY WERE CLEANED NOT JUST BY OUR OWN FACILITY STAFF, BUT BY OUR SUMMER STUDENT WORKERS.

IT'S REALLY A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO BE ABLE TO EMPLOY OUR VERY OWN STUDENTS, LEARN A LOT OF LESSONS ABOUT HARD WORK, ORGANIZATION, PERSISTENCE, AND REALLY JUST THE VALUE OF HARD WORK AND COLLABORATION AND COOPERATION.

IT'S ALWAYS EXCITING TO SEE THE KIDS WHO REALLY DEVELOP A PRIDE IN THEIR WORK IN THEIR OWN SCHOOL BECAUSE WHEN THEY COME BACK TO SCHOOL AS STUDENTS, THAT PRIDE STAYS WITH THEM AND THEY ARE THE STUDENTS WHO REALLY HELPED TO BE GOOD ROLE MODELS TO THEIR PEERS IN THAT SENSE.

ALL OF OUR CLASSROOMS CLEANED, ALL WOOD FLOORS IN THE GYMNASIUMS. THE WOOD FLOOR GYMNASIUMS WERE REFINISHED AS WELL WITHOUT USING OUTSIDE VENDORS.

THAT BRINGS US THROUGH THERE.

JUST, AND I KNOW JIM WANTED ME TO ADD THESE.

HE'S ADDED HIS REPORT BEFORE, BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO REITERATE.

WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THOSE SUMMER WORKERS, THE FACILITIES TEAM CLEAN MORE THAN 450,000 SQUARE FEET OF BUILDING, OVER 3,400 DESKS AND CHAIRS, OVER 1,500 LOCKERS, 160-PLUS CLASSROOMS, AND SEVEN GYMNASIUMS. ALL WHILE RUNNING SUMMER REC PROGRAMS, SUMMER ACADEMIC LEARNING PROGRAMS, SUMMER STARS, AND SOME OF OUR OWN ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, OUTSIDE GROUPS, I CAN'T EVEN LIST.

EVEN THINGS LIKE SENIOR PORTRAITS COMING IN AND STARTING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.

THEY WORKED AROUND REALLY COLLABORATIVELY WITH THE ADMINISTRATORS IN JIM'S OFFICE TO WORK AROUND ALL THOSE EVENTS, TO PLAN OUT, TO GET THE WORK DONE SO THAT THINGS WERE BEAUTIFUL AND READY FOR THE START OF SCHOOL.

THANK YOU TO THEM.

THANK YOU FOR THE MIRACLES THAT THESE FACILITY STAFF DID TO MAKE ALL THIS HAPPEN, TO MAKE IT LOOK SO SEAMLESS AND TO REALLY CONTINUE TO REPRESENT US WITH EXCELLENCE IN EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO.

THANK YOU TO THEM. I'M GOING TO STOP THERE.

IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD OR ANYTHING FROM OUR TOUR THAT YOU WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT MAYBE I FORGOT TO HIGHLIGHT TODAY?

>> ACTUALLY, I HAVE A QUESTION.

SORRY. I KNOW IT'S STILL EARLY, BUT SINCE NOW WE HAVE TWO NEW WAYS OF GETTING TO THE HUTCH.

HAVE WE HAD ANY FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE GOING UP THE STEPS OR USING THE NEW SIDEWALK?

>> NOTHING NOTHING HAS MADE IT TO MY LEVEL YET, BUT I CAN LOOK INTO THAT FOR OUR NEXT REPORT.

I CAN SEE HOPEFULLY POSITIVE FEEDBACK.

>> I'LL JUST EXPRESS THANKS FOR THE INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF WORK THAT GOES INTO MAKING THE SCHOOLS.

THEY WERE IN TIP-TOP SHAPE WHEN WE WALKED THROUGH, SO WONDERFUL.

THANK YOU, EVERYONE, AND PARTICULARLY TO THE STUDENTS WHO JUMPED IN TO HELP.

>> WELL, WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO TRANSITION TO THE LAST PRESENTATION IN MY PART OF THE PROGRAM TONIGHT.

BUT CERTAINLY, THIS IS A PRECURSOR TO WHAT ARE THE ITEMS THAT'S ON THE AGENDA FOR APPROVAL TONIGHT, AND THAT IS THE BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT GOALS FOR THE YEAR.

I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT JUST TO NOTE FOR ANYONE WHO MAY BE WATCHING, THIS IS PART OF ANNUALLY, WE MEET AS A BOARD.

WE MEET IN RETREAT EACH SUMMER TO TALK ABOUT THE YEAR AHEAD, TO MAKE PLANS, TO SET GOALS, STRATEGIC FOCUS FOR THE YEAR.

THIS YEAR WE MET TWICE OVER THE SUMMER.

THIS WORK THAT I'M PRESENTING TONIGHT CAME FROM OUR WORK PREDOMINANTLY IN OUR JULY MEETING WHERE WE MET, WHICH IT WAS GREAT.

IT WAS WONDERFUL TO BE ABLE TO MEET THAT EARLY IN THE SUMMER.

BECAUSE THAT THEN GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH THE CABINET THIS SUMMER AND REALLY FLESH OUT THE DETAIL OF HOW ARE WE GOING TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, WHICH WAS GREAT.

WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO SHARE THIS TONIGHT.

THE BOARD CERTAINLY HAS A MUCH MORE DETAILED, THE INTERNAL MORE DETAILED DOCUMENT TONIGHT.

WE'RE JUST GOING TO GIVE AN OVERVIEW AND ON THE AGENDA TONIGHT WE'RE ASKING THE BOARD TO APPROVE JUST THOSE TOP-LINE GOALS THAT YOU DEVELOPED AS PART OF THAT RETREAT.

I THINK IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO START WITH THE GUIDING STATEMENTS FOR US.

[01:20:03]

THE STRATEGIC PLAN PREAMBLE AND WHEN I MENTIONED THIS TO DR. CALLAHAN IN REGAL EARLIER, THIS IS THAT DEFINITION TO ME THAT ENCAPSULATES THE GOAL OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN, DEVELOP EMPOWERED, ADAPTABLE, WELL-BALANCED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EQUIPPED TO MEANINGFULLY CONTRIBUTE TO OUR LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND GLOBAL SOCIETY.

EVERYTHING THAT WE DO IS AIMED AT THAT CENTER, THAT WHY, AND OF COURSE OUR DISTRICT MOTTO; INSPIRING STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR ALL STUDENTS UNDERGIRDS ALL THAT WE DO.

THINKING ABOUT THOSE THINGS HEADING INTO THE GOALS THAT THE BOARD AND I WORKED TOGETHER ON.

THESE GOALS REALLY, I KNOW WORKING WITH THE CONSULTANTS CAME FROM LISTENING TO THE DESIRES OF EACH BOARD MEMBER.

WHAT WERE THOSE COMMON THEMES? WHAT ARE THE COMMON AREAS? THEN OF COURSE, WE DISCUSSED THAT AS A GOVERNANCE TEAM TOGETHER TO IDENTIFY THESE THREE GOAL AREAS FOR THE YEAR.

FINANCING AND FACILITIES, ACADEMICS, AND CLIMATE AND COMMUNICATIONS SPECIFICALLY AND I'LL READ THEM FOR THE SAKE OF THOSE WATCHING WHO MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SEE.

CONDUCTED DISTRICT-WIDE FACILITIES UPDATE TO DETERMINE AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT AND FINANCING OPTIONS TO CREATE A WORLD-CLASS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

ACADEMICS; DETERMINE HOW STUDENT GROWTH AND ACHIEVEMENT DATA WILL BE IDENTIFIED, COLLECTED, UTILIZED, AND ANALYZE TO ENHANCE STUDENTS' K-12 EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE.

CLIMATE AND COMMUNICATIONS; STRENGTHEN THE SENSE OF BELONGING AND TRUST THROUGH THE USE OF CLIMATE AND COMMUNICATION SURVEY DATA AND THE STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION OF RECOMMENDATIONS.

DRILLING FARTHER INTO FIRST THE FINANCE AND FACILITIES GOAL.

AS WE LOOK TO DETERMINE AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT AND FINANCING OPTIONS TO BUILD THAT WORLD-CLASS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, WE'RE HOPING BY THE END OF THIS YEAR, THE GOAL IS TO HAVE A THOROUGH REVIEW OF OUR RESERVES SO THE BOARD HAS A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF WHERE WE STAND WITH THOSE, ON HOW STRATEGIC USE OF THOSE GOING FORWARD HAVE A COMPLETED BUILDING CONDITION SURVEY THAT HAS ACTUALLY ALREADY BEEN COMMISSIONED.

JIM IS WORKING WITH KGD, IS OUR DISTRICT ARCHITECT.

THEY'VE ALREADY GOTTEN THAT WORK IS STARTING TO GET UNDERWAY.

REVIEW OF ENROLLMENT SPACE AND CLASS SIZES, SO A SPACE UTILIZATION STUDY.

AGAIN, THAT IS SOMETHING THAT JIM HAS ALREADY CONTACTED THEM TO START TO WORK ON.

WE'VE ALREADY ALSO BEEN INTERNALLY AMONGST THE CABINET.

JUST DOING A DEEPER DIVE INTO ROOM UTILIZATION MASTER SCHEDULES, JUST GETTING OURSELVES GETTING A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THOSE ARE.

COMPLETED 5-YEAR FACILITIES PLAN.

THAT'S OUR GOAL BY THE END OF THIS YEAR TO HAVE A BOARD-ENDORSED 5-YEAR FACILITIES PLAN.

THEN AGAIN, THAT UNDERSTANDING OF THE FINANCIAL OPTIONS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF UNDERSTANDING THE RESOURCES IS ONE PIECE OF IT, BUT UNDERSTANDING WHAT ARE THE ALL THE POTENTIAL FINANCING OPTIONS THAT WE HAVE AS TOOLS TO HELP US ADDRESS THE FACILITIES NEEDS THAT WE IDENTIFY TO THEN CREATE THAT WORLD-CLASS LEARNING ENVIRONMENT.

FOR MANY PEOPLE, I KNOW THIS MIGHT SOUND LIKE WHAT WE DID DURING BOND FEASIBILITY.

THIS IS A LITTLE PRECURSOR TO THAT.

THIS IS NOT A BOND FEASIBILITY STUDY, BUT THIS IS A DEEP DIVE INTO REALLY UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF THE FACILITIES, THE SHORT AND LONG-TERM PLAN FOR THOSE FACILITIES, AND THE TOOLS WE HAVE AVAILABLE TO ADDRESS THOSE, WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO VARIOUS DISCUSSIONS ABOUT HOW TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.

SOME THINGS THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE KEEPING IN MIND AS WE WORK TOWARDS THAT GOAL ARE CERTAINLY INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS.

THERE ARE MANY THINGS, AS WE MENTIONED, THE HVAC SYSTEMS ALREADY.

WE MENTIONED HEAT.

IF WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING TOWARDS AIR CONDITIONING, WHAT ARE THE INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS THAT WE NEED TO BUILD IN TO MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN SUPPORT THOSE SYSTEMS? A DEEP DIVE INTO WHAT THOSE NEEDS ARE ACROSS THE DISTRICT IN VARIOUS AREAS.

I MENTIONED EARLIER WE'RE GETTING IT UPDATED DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY.

THAT WILL HELP US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS PROJECTED ENROLLMENT THAT WE NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT.

WHAT WE AS THE BOARD KNOWS DOING STRATEGIC PLANNING THIS YEAR, WHICH WILL HELP US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ARE THE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND GOALS THAT WE WANT FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THAT WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION.

THEN WHAT ARE THE SPACES THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO THEN SUPPORT MAKING THAT HAPPEN FOR OUR STUDENTS.

WHAT'S THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPACE AND GOALS? ONE OF THE THINGS, AND I HAVE TO SAY WE MENTIONED THIS WHEN WE TALKED WITH THE ADMINISTRATORS AT OUR RETREAT ABOUT IT, THE IDEA OF VISITING SOME PEER SCHOOLS TO SEE WHAT OTHER SCHOOLS ARE DOING.

HOW ARE THEY DOING? HOW ARE THEY USING THEIR SPACE? HOW ARE THEY MEETING THEIR LEARNING GOALS? WHAT IDEAS MIGHT BE OUT THERE? IN LEVEL DISCUSSIONS, WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE REALLY STRATEGIC ABOUT WHERE WE GO AND WHO WE VISIT BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME VERY UNIQUE QUALITIES TO PELHAM.

WE HAVE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS.

NOT EVERYBODY HAS NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS.

THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON HOW WE USE OUR SPACE AND WHAT OUR PROGRAMS LOOK LIKE.

WE ARE VERY LANDLOCKED AS WE ALL KNOW.

WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF ROOM TO EXPAND.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WE HAVE BEAUTIFUL OLD HISTORIC BUILDINGS.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR US? WHEN WE PICK THOSE PEER DISTRICTS, I THINK WE WANT TO THINK ABOUT ALL THOSE FACTORS TOO, SO WE CAN START TO SEE WHAT'S ASPIRATIONAL AND VISIONARY, BUT WHAT'S ALSO REALISTIC WITHIN OUR SIMILAR PARAMETERS.

WE HAVE LOTS OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM THAT I

[01:25:02]

THINK IS GOING TO BE VERY EXCITED TO JOIN US ON SOME OF THOSE, TO THINK ABOUT IT FROM THE EDUCATION AND LEARNING PERSPECTIVE TOO.

WE PLANNED NUMBER OF WORK SECTIONS FOR THIS YEAR.

ONE OF THEM IS SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER.

LOOKING AT CERTAINLY THOSE BIG TOP-LINE STRATEGIC BUDGET GOALS AS WE BEGIN THE BUDGET PLANNING PROCESS AND WHAT ARE THE IMPACT OF OUR PROGRAMS. WE'LL BE SPENDING TIME LOOKING AT THAT THIS YEAR AND I KNOW THAT THERE'S ALSO A DESIRE FOR US TO LOOK AT SUSTAINABILITY.

WHETHER THAT'S FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY, CERTAINLY THAT'S A GIVEN.

WE HAVE TO, AS A FINANCIAL STEWARDS, FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY BE ABLE TO THINKING ABOUT THAT ALWAYS.

BUT ALSO, HOW CAN WE LOOK MORE AT ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AS WE LOOK AT OUR FACILITIES AND CONTINUE TO IMPROVE AND GROW IN THAT AREA? MOVING INTO THE ACADEMIC GOAL.

THE OUTCOMES THERE THAT THE BOARD IS LOOKING FOR IS CREATION TO THAT SYSTEM TO REVIEW STUDENT GROWTH AND ACHIEVEMENT DATA.

THEN ALSO, WE KNOW THAT IN ORDER FOR STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE AND TO ACCESS THEIR LEARNING, THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS HAS TO FOUNDATIONALLY BE IN PLACE FOR THEM TO ACCESS THAT.

HOW ARE WE ALSO THEN GOING TO LOOK AT AND ASSESS OUR STUDENTS IN THAT REALM AND IDENTIFY NEEDS SO THAT WE CAN INTERVENE, PROVIDE THOSE SUPPORTS TO MAKE STUDENTS READILY ACCESSIBLE FOR THEIR LEARNING? IN THAT AREA, SOME OF THE DELIVERABLES ARE FACTORS THAT WE'LL BE CONSIDERING, IS SOME WORK AGAIN THAT IS ALREADY UNDERWAY.

IMPLEMENTATION OF DATABASE, WHICH IS A TYPE OF A DATA DASHBOARD THAT WILL BE BUILT OFF OF INFINITE CAMPUS.

WE'VE LEARNED SINCE OUR LAST MEETING AND INSTANCE AT LSE.

THEIR INTERMEDIATE SYSTEM BETWEEN INFINITE CAMPUS AND DATA VIZ IS TABLEAU.

DATA VIZ WILL GIVE US REALLY SOME PRE-WRITTEN REPORTS.

WE'RE NOT THE FIRST PEOPLE TO BE GOING ON THIS ADVENTURE, SO MIGHT AS WELL LEARN LESSONS FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN ON THIS PATH BEFORE AS WELL AS SOME OF OUR FOLKS WHO ARE GETTING TRAINED IN HOW TO WRITE CUSTOM REPORTS TOO.

I KNOW DR. BOWMAN IS ALREADY WORKING ON THAT ONBOARDING, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE ROLLING THAT OUT TO THE ADMINISTRATORS THIS FALL.

I KNOW THAT'S ONE PIECE THAT I KNOW WE TALK ABOUT POTENTIALLY HAVING ANOTHER RETREAT IN DECEMBER WHERE WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THAT'S LOOKING LIKE.

ALSO, A BIG PIECE OF OUR WORK THIS YEAR IS EXPANSION OF THE BRANCHING MINDS PLATFORM, THAT HAS BEEN A DATA DASHBOARD THAT'S MORE INTERNAL FACING THAT DR.

BOWMAN AND THE ADMINISTRATORS HAVE BEEN USING THIS PAST YEAR SPECIFICALLY WITH ADMINISTRATORS AND WITH INTERVENTIONISTS AS PART OF THE MTSS PROCESS.

ON SUPERINTENDENTS CONFERENCE DAY, WE DID A TRAINING FOR ALL THE FACULTY Kā€“5, AND THAT WILL BE ROLLING OUT NOW TO THE CLASSROOM LEVEL AS OUR FOCUS FOR THIS YEAR WAS VERY HEAVILY ON MTSS, VERY HEAVILY ON TIER 1.

SO HELPING TEACHERS TO UNDERSTAND, GIVE THEM THE SKILLS AND RESOURCES FOR IMPLEMENTING TIER 1 INTERVENTIONS, BUT ALSO NOW USING BRANCHING MINDS AS A DATA TOOL TO TRACK STUDENT PROGRESS AND TO HELP US TO IDENTIFY STUDENTS THAT ARE USING MULTIPLE MEASURES, STUDENTS WHO ARE NEEDING INTERVENTION, AND THEN ALSO OFFERING RESOURCES FOR THOSE INTERVENTIONS SO WE HAVE RESEARCH-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO HELP STUDENTS TO FILL IN ANY GAPS AND GROW IN THEIR LEARNING.

THAT'S TWO WAYS THAT WE'RE LOOKING TO HARNESS DATA.

TIMELY REPORTING TO THE BOARD.

THAT WAS PART OF OUR CONVERSATION AS WELL.

WITH THE TOOLS, IT WILL GIVE US THE CAPACITY TO DO BETTER AND MORE TIMELY REPORTING OF STUDENT PROGRESS TO THE BOARD.

AGAIN, ANOTHER WORK SESSION WE HAVE PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR IS LATER IN NOVEMBER TO LOOK AT WHAT IS THE TRI-STATES CONSORTIUM WHICH HAVE BEEN A LONGSTANDING PARTNER IN OUR WORK WITH THEM, AND WHAT THAT MEANS FOR AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT.

I KNOW EVERYONE RECOGNIZES ASSESSMENT AND DATA IS NOT ALL QUANTITATIVE, ESPECIALLY IN A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT LIKE IN A MISSION-VISION DRIVEN ORGANIZATION LIKE A SCHOOL WHERE YOU'RE WORKING TO RAISE CHILDREN TO BE FUNCTIONING WELL-ROUNDED HUMAN BEINGS.

THERE'S A LOT OF QUALITATIVE THAT GOES INTO IT.

WELL, SO THAT'S WHERE TRI-STATES PARTNER IS VERY HELPFUL ON FOCUSING OUR WORK ON AUTHENTIC LEARNING AND THEN WAYS TO ASSESS THAT LEARNING.

FINALLY, MOVING TO THE THIRD GOAL AREA.

IT'S CLIMATE COMMUNICATION, SO A COMBINATION OF TWO THINGS.

THE OUTCOMES WE'RE LOOKING FOR THERE CERTAINLY IS THE COMPLETED; WE HAVE A COMPLETED COMMUNICATIONS AUDIT.

YOU'LL BE HEARING ABOUT THAT AT OUR NEXT BOARD MEETING.

ALEX WOLF WILL BE DOING A PARTIAL PRESENTATION THERE, AND THE RESEARCHER WHO PRODUCED THE AUDIT WILL BE HERE TO PRESENT THE FINDINGS AND THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THAT.

SHE ALSO IS GOING TO BE WORKING WITH US TO DEVELOP THE STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS PLAN.

IT WILL BE NOT JUST A SHORT-TERM, BUT LONG-TERM COMMUNICATIONS PLAN.

SHE'LL BE ABLE TO SHARE SOME INSIGHTS FROM THAT AT OUR NEXT MEETING, AND THEN ALEX AND I HAVE ALREADY BEEN WORKING AND AGAIN ROLLING IT OUT TO THE ADMINISTRATORS ALREADY SOME INITIAL QUICK WINS AND LOW HANGING FRUIT TO START TO IMPLEMENT

[01:30:02]

THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS JUST BASED ON THE AUDIT ITSELF.

THEN, ONCE WE MEET WITH AUDREY AND GET THAT STRATEGIC PLAN, THAT'S GOING TO GIVE US AN EVEN BETTER ROADMAP.

IT'S HOW TO MOVE FORWARD WITH COMMUNICATIONS, WHICH IS GOING TO BE A PIECE OF BUILDING TRUST AND REINFORCING THAT CLIMATE CULTURE OF BELONGING THROUGH CLEAR COMMUNICATION.

ADDITIONALLY, WE'RE IMPLEMENTING THE STAFF CLIMATE SURVEY THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT, THAT WILL BE LAUNCHING MID-OCTOBER.

THEN WE'RE LOOKING TO GET THE RESULTS OF THAT BACK HOPEFULLY END OF JANUARY ON THE EARLY SIDE, EARLY FEBRUARY AT THE LATEST WITH THE RESEARCHER COMING TO PRESENT THAT TO THE BOARD, THE FINDINGS, AND WORKING WITH THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM TO THEN COME UP WITH IMPLEMENTATION PLAN OF THE DATA HAS SHOWN US THIS, THIS IS WHAT WE PLAN TO DO ABOUT IT AND LINING AND COMING UP WITH THAT TIMELINE FOR IMPLEMENTATION AND DOING SOME IMPLEMENTATION.

FINALLY, AT OUR BOARD RETREAT, WE TALKED ABOUT REALLY THESE LAST TWO PIECES; FINDING WAYS AS A BOARD TO HAVE SOME DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS SO THAT WE CAN MODEL CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND RESPECTFUL, COLLABORATIVE DECISION-MAKING AS A GROUP.

THEN I THINK THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF ALL OF THIS IS CREATING ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE FEELS LIKE THEY BELONG.

SO CLEAR COMMUNICATION, ATTENTION TO CULTURE AND CLIMATE, ATTENTION TO OPEN AND HONEST CONVERSATIONS IN A RESPECTFUL MANNER FOR US TO MODEL AND THEN HELP TO CREATE THAT ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE FEELS THEY BELONG.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERING ALONG THE WAY, OF COURSE, THAT IS OUR ULTIMATE GOAL, THAT WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT SO I KNOW THAT THE BOARD IS LOOKING FOR THAT COMPLETED CLIMATE SURVEY AND AN ACTION PLAN BASED ON THAT BY THE END OF THE YEAR AS WELL AS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNICATION TO UNDERSCORE THAT GOAL AREA.

THEN JUST FINALLY TRANSITIONING TO LAST COUPLE OF ITEMS. THIS IS THE FINAL YEAR OF OUR CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN.

IT WAS 2019 THROUGH 2024.

WE WILL BE LAUNCHING A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN, PLANT PLANNING PROCESS THIS WINTER AND SPRING WITH THE GOAL OF HAVING A NEW PLAN DEVELOPED AND APPROVED BY THE BOARD END OF JUNE AND THEN IMPLEMENTATION NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.

TO THAT END, WHEN I WRAP UP THE FORMAL PRESENTATION, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR, I THINK I HAD MENTIONED I WAS GOING TO VENTURE DOING NEW BUSINESS, BUT SINCE WE'RE ENDING THE STRATEGIC PLAN, MAYBE WE COULD PAUSE AND JUST TALK FOR A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE LAST STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS AND SEE IF THE BOARD HAS ANY FEEDBACK THERE AS WE PLAN AHEAD FOR SELECTING THE CONSULTANT AND PROCESS FOR THE NEW PLAN.

WE'LL COME BACK TO THAT IN A MOMENT.

BUT TO FINALLY WRAP THIS OUT, IN THE CULTURAL COMPETENCE AREA, AS WE LOOK TO FINISH OUT THE PLAN, A COUPLE OF AREAS THAT WE WANT IT TO JUST BE SURE TO TOUCH THIS YEAR AS I ALREADY MENTIONED, SCHOOL CULTURE COACHES, THEY'RE BEING APPROVED TONIGHT, AND WE'RE GOING TO BE FINALIZING SELECTION OF A CONSULTANT TO WORK WITH US.

THAT SHOULD BE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS HOPEFULLY ON EITHER THE AGENDA ON THE 27TH FOR APPROVAL.

WE'RE DOWN TO THE TWO PROVIDERS THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT, AND A SMALL GROUP IS GOING TO BE INTERVIEWING THEM AND MAKING A RECOMMENDATION.

STAFF CLIMATE SURVEY, WE'VE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT.

HIGH SCHOOL IS LOOKING TO IMPLEMENT A STUDENT CLIMATE SURVEY THIS YEAR.

THE MIDDLE-SCHOOL HAS ALREADY DONE ONE, SO LOOKING TO BUILD SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THAT TO HELP THEM CONTINUE TO GROW AND EVOLVE IN THEIR PROGRAM AND AGAIN TO REALLY FIND WAYS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL STUDENTS ARE CONNECTED.

THEN ANOTHER PIECE THAT WAS BUILT IN THE ORIGINAL PLAN, WHICH WE MAY OR MAY NOT GET TO, BUT IT WAS REALLY THE LAST PIECE THAT WE HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO YET IS INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, RESOURCES RUBRIC, JUST SOMETHING TO USE TO HELP EVALUATE RESOURCES AS WE BRING WHETHER IT'S TEXTBOOKS. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT ELSE.

ONLINE RESOURCES.

JUST SOME OF THE DIFFERENT RESOURCES THAT WE USE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

LIBRARY BOOKS, THINGS LIKE THAT.

REALLY MOSTLY FOCUSING ON CURRICULAR INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ARE JUST A SIMPLE RUBRIC THAT WE COULD USE TO THINK ABOUT A CULTURALLY COMPETENT LENS AS WE'RE WRITING NEW CURRICULUM AND DEVELOP A SELECTING NEW RESOURCES.

THAT'S MORE ON A LONG-TERM HORIZON, BUT THAT IS STILL ON THE LIST OF THINGS THAT WE MAY LOOK TO DO THIS YEAR.

MOVING INTO AUTHENTIC LEARNING.

DR. BOWDEN MAY HAVE ALREADY MENTIONED THIS IN A PRIOR MEETING.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MAIN FOCUS AGAIN FOR THIS YEAR AS MTSS, SO STRENGTHENING OUR MTSS.

ESTABLISHING NOW A DISTRICT LEVEL MTSS COMMITTEE TO HELP US TO CONTINUE TO BRING OUR PRACTICES AND PROCESSES SIMILARLY, SHARE BEST PRACTICES, SET SOME COMMON STANDARDS AND CONTINUE TO EVOLVE OUR WORK THERE.

CONTINUING TO LOOK THROUGH OUR CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND IMPLEMENTATION, ASSURING THAT WE HAVE TOOLS TO EVALUATE AUTHENTIC LEARNING.

AS I SAID EARLIER, WE ALL KNOW THAT LEARNING IS NOT JUST ALL ABOUT QUANTITATIVE MEASURES, IT'S ABOUT THE QUALITATIVE AS WELL AND HAVING REALLY THOUGHTFUL, WELL-DESIGNED, AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT TOOLS MATCHED TO THE AUTHENTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCES IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT.

[01:35:01]

SO WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DEEPEN THAT WORK AND A LOT OF THAT WORK HAPPENS THROUGH TRY STATES IN PARTICULAR IS ONE EXAMPLE OF THAT WORK.

WE'VE MENTIONED IT BEFORE, I BRING IT UP AGAIN BECAUSE IT FITS IN HERE AS WELL.

WE WILL BE WORKING WITH MICHAEL RETTIG.

HE'S A SCHEDULING CONSULTANT WE BROUGHT IN A FEW YEARS AGO. HE'S COMING BACK.

ORIGINALLY WAS SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER IT'S GOTTEN MOVED TO JANUARY.

BUT TO TAKE A LOOK AT JUST SOME TWEAKS TO ELEMENTARY MASTER SCHEDULES POTENTIALLY AND THEN START TO BRAINSTORM IDEAS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL MASTER SCHEDULE TO SEE IF OUR CURRENT STRUCTURE MATCHES OUR CURRENT LEARNING GOALS AND IF NOT, HOW WE MIGHT LOOK TO EVOLVE THAT IN TIME.

FINALLY, THE LAST BULLET IS SOMETHING THAT WE ACTUALLY JUST DID LAST WEEK, EXPAND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ON USE OF FLEXIBLE FURNISHINGS.

IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THE TEACHERS GET TO WORK WITH ESPECIALLY THE EDUCATORS FROM THE FLEXIBLE FURNISHINGS COMPANY TO REALLY PUT THEORY INTO PRACTICE AND HELP THEM JUST VISUALIZE HOW TO USE THE FURNITURE IN ALL DIFFERENT WAYS.

PEOPLE THEY SAID THEY'D SPENT HOURS TRYING TO REPLICATE CERTAIN CONFIGURATIONS, CONSULTANTS CAME IN AND FIVE MINUTES BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE FURNITURE, THEY KNOW THE SYSTEMS. TEACHER SAYS WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR, WHAT THEY WANT, AND THEY KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

IT WAS GREAT THOUGH TO SEE THE LIGHT BULBS GO OFF AND SO MANY OF OUR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS TRIED THOSE NEW APPROACHES THE NEXT DAY; THEY WERE THRILLED WITH THE SETUP.

FINAL AREA OF FINAL SLIDE; THE WHOLE CHILD. ERRY MENTIONED THIS.

WE'RE LOOKING TO EXPAND OUR BRANCHING MINDS.

WE DO WANT TO DO A PARENT ENGAGEMENT SESSION ON MTSS THIS YEAR.

WE'D WANT IT TO DO IT LAST YEAR, RAN OUT OF TIME, BUT WE DEFINITELY WANT TO BRING THAT OPPORTUNITY BACK THIS YEAR AS WE FOCUS SO MUCH ON IT.

CONTINUING THE EXPANSION AND FOCUS ON OUR SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, AND MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMMING.

AGAIN, TRACY WORKED WITH THE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM ON A GAAP ANALYSIS; SHE AND DR. BOWDEN MET OVER THE SUMMER.

SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS THERE.

WHERE DO WE NEED TO START LOOKING AT BUILDING A STRONGER CONTINUUM TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH? WE PRESENTED THIS TO THE ADMINISTRATORS AND I BELIEF TO THE STAFF BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR, WHICH IS FEW DAYS AGO.

WE REALLY WANTED TO BE CLEAR, WE DO A LOT.

THERE'S A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WORK THAT OUR FACULTY ARE DOING, OUR STAFF, OUR ADMINISTRATORS, AND IT CAN GET OVERWHELMING.

WE'VE REALLY TRIED TO BOIL IT DOWN TO WHAT ARE THE TWO BIG OVERRIDING THINGS THAT IS DRIVING ALL WE DO AND IT REALLY CAME DOWN TO THESE TWO THINGS; THAT BUILDING THAT CULTURE OF BELONGINGNESS THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS, COMMUNICATION, ATTENTION TO SCHOOL CULTURE.

CULTURE BELONGINGNESS AND BUILDING UP OUR MTSS SYSTEM AND BALANCING THAT WITH AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS SO THAT WE'RE REALLY GETTING A STRONG PICTURE ABOUT WHERE OUR KIDS ARE, WHAT THEY NEED, AND HOW TO MOVE THEM FORWARD.

THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF THIS AND I KNOW I'VE DONE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TALKING TONIGHT.

WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO TAKE A SEAT, BUT I WOULD WORK ON QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD AND CERTAINLY THEN ALSO WANT TO TRANSITION TO JUST SPEND A FEW MINUTES TO GET YOUR FEEDBACK ON WHAT YOU SAW FROM THE STRATEGIC PLANNING OF DOCUMENTS THAT ARE SHARED FROM THE PAST AND THEN ANY FEEDBACK FOR US TO BE THINKING ABOUT AS WE MOVE FORWARD TOWARDS WRITING AN RFP AND SELECTING A CONSULTANT.

>> DOCHUM, WHILE YOU'RE UP THERE, CAN YOU JUST GO BACK TO THE FACILITIES SLIDES? THERE'S ONE CAUGHT MY EYE. YEAH, THIS ONE.

THE FACTORS TO CONSIDER.

NEXT ONE. THERE YOU GO.

PRESUMABLY, ONE OF THE OTHER FACTORS ON THIS LONG LIST IS ADA COMPLIANCE FROM BUILDING TO BUILDING.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> BECAUSE I THINK THOSE OF YOU [OVERLAPPING] THAT EVER LOOKED INTO WHY IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO MAKE MATERIAL IMPROVEMENTS TO SCHOOLS.

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT CABINET TREE AND LIGHT BULBS, I'M TALKING ABOUT INFRASTRUCTURE THINGS LIKE CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING IN THE OLDER BUILDINGS.

IS IT NOT FAIR TO SAY THAT A LOT OF THOSE MATERIAL STRUCTURAL CHANGES DON'T GET APPROVED BY THE STATE UNTIL THE BUILDING IS ADA COMPLIANT AND SO THAT MAKE?

>> YES. VERY WELL SAID.

THAT WAS OUR CHALLENGE IN 2018, BECAUSE WE HAD COLONIAL WAS ADA ACCESSIBLE, THESE TWO BUILDINGS WERE THE THREE ELEMENTARIES WERE NOT.

AS WE CONSIDERED OPTIONS FOR RENOVATING HUTCHINSON, THAT WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST FACTORS AS YOU HAD TO DEAL WITH THE ADA AND THAT PRESENTED A VARIETY OF CHALLENGES, AND THEN THE COST ESCALATED WITH THOSE CHALLENGES.

THAT WAS PART OF WHY WE WERE ABLE TO.

WE WENT TOWARDS THE DECISION FOR THE NEW BUILDING.

WITH PROSPECT HILL, SAME SITUATION, THEY DIDN'T HAVE A DOUBLE DOOR SECURITY ENTRY WHICH THE OTHER BUILDINGS DID.

THEY WERE ALSO TIGHT FOR SPACE AND WERE NOT ADA ACCESSIBLE.

SO THAT EXPANSION ENABLED US TO REALLY CHECK THOSE THREE BOXES, GAVE THEM EXTRA SPACE, GAVE THEM MORE SECURE ENTRANCE, AND GAVE THEM THE ADA ACCESSIBILITY THAT WAS REQUIRED A FIVE-STAR ELEVATOR TO GET TO ALL THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE BUILDING.

WITH SAYUNOI, THAT'S OUR CHALLENGE THERE AND I AM GLAD YOU RAISED THAT.

[01:40:03]

WE DID IN OUR INITIAL CONCEPTUAL DRAWINGS OF SAYUNOI TOO TO MAKE IT FULLY ACCESSIBLE WOULD NEED TWO ELEVATORS BECAUSE OF THE SPLIT LEVEL DESIGN.

IN ORDER TO DO THAT, YOU WOULD ACTUALLY LOSE OTHER SPACE.

SO IT WILL BE ELEVATORS OFF THE BACKSIDE OF THE BUILDING.

YOU'D BE WIPING OUT CURRENT BATHROOMS AND SOME OF THE SMALL CLASSROOMS. WHAT YOU LOSE, YOU HAVE TO THEN REBUILD SO YOU'D NEED MORE EXPANSION.

ABSOLUTELY DOABLE, BUT ALL THAT ADDS COST AND COMPLICATION.

THOSE ARE EXACTLY THE THINGS AND I THINK I'M GLAD YOU SAID THAT AND I REALLY SHOULD ADD THIS TO THE LIST BECAUSE I KNOW THE DISTRICT'S COMMITMENT, THE BOARD'S COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY INTO INCLUSION.

WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A SCHOOLS THAT ANYBODY CAN COME TO AT ANYTIME; ANY OF OUR CHILDREN CAN BE IN ANY OF OUR SCHOOLS REGARDLESS OF THEIR MOBILITY ISSUES.

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING I THINK THAT WILL BE KEEPING IN MIND AS WELL.

THERE ARE PIECES OF SAYUNOI THAT ARE ACCESSIBLE, I DO WANT TO MAKE THAT CLEAR TOO.

IT'S JUST THE ENTIRE BUILDING AS A WHOLE IS NOT CURRENTLY ACCESSIBLE.

BUT TO DO ANY MAJOR PROJECT ON THAT BUILDING, WE WILL ADDRESS THOSE ADA ISSUES.

REALLY JUST THE LAST PIECE I KNOW I SHARED WITH THE BOARD, THE GOOGLE FOLDER FROM THE LAST STRATEGIC PLANNING, IT WAS INCREDIBLY OVERWHELMING.

I HOPE NOBODY SAT AND READ THROUGH EVERYTHING IN THERE, THAT WAS NOT THE INTENTION.

BOARD, I WANTED YOU TO SEE WHAT'S THE DEPTH OF THE WORK.

THE PROCESS THAT THE LAST COUPLE OF TIMES ONCE WAS WHEN DR. TERESA WAS HERE, ONCE WITH ME.

THE PROCESS THAT WE WENT AND UNDERTOOK WAS, COMMUNITY SURVEYS WAS GENERALLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST FIRST PIECES.

AS YOU PROBABLY SAW IN THERE, THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF RESPONSES FROM PARENTS, FROM I THINK WE DID OLDER STUDENTS, STAFF, COMMUNITY MEMBERS.

THAT REALLY PROVIDED A WEALTH OF DATA FOR US TO LOOK AT.

THE SURVEY LAST TIME WAS PRETTY ON PAR, PRETTY CLOSE TO THE SAME AS THE ONE THE PRIOR YEAR, SO THAT WE COULD GET SOME SIMILAR THEMES.

THAT WAS STEP 1, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE RESPONDED, THEN HAD TWO BACK-TO-BACK DAYS WITH A GROUP OF ABOUT 40 PEOPLE MADE UP OF SHARED STAKEHOLDERS.

IT WAS A COUPLE OF BOARD MEMBERS, ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, PARENTS, HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS, A COUPLE OF SUPPORT STAFF AS WELL.

WE SAT TOGETHER OVER THOSE TWO DAYS AND TOOK ALL THAT DATA, AND I FORGOT ONE PIECE OF IT TOO.

THE CONSULTANT ACTUALLY HELD FOCUS GROUPS SO THAT WE CAN HAVE QUALITATIVE FEEDBACK TO SUPPLEMENT THE QUANTITATIVE.

WE TOOK ALL OF THAT FEEDBACK, WE DID SOME PRE-READINGS ON INNOVATION IN SCHOOLS, INNOVATIVE THINKING, JOB MARKETS, SKILLS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY, THOSE THINGS, AND THEN SPENT TWO DAYS REALLY SYNTHESIZING THAT DATA, AND AS A GROUP, IDENTIFYING WHAT THEMES SURFACED AS THINGS THAT OUR PARENTS, OUR STAFF, OUR STUDENTS ALL SAID WERE IMPORTANT, THAT THEY WANTED TO SEE AREAS FOR GROWTH.

OUT OF THAT SURFACED THE BIG THEMES, THE CULTURAL COMPETENCE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, AND WHOLE CHILD.

MAYBE NOT NECESSARILY IN THOSE WORDS, BUT THEMES AROUND THOSE AREAS.

THAT'S WHAT REALLY IDENTIFIED OUR THREE GOAL AREAS.

IF YOU GO BACK TO WHEN DR. SYRIZA WAS HERE, THAT YEAR IT SURFACED FOR DIFFERENT THEMES.

THOSE WERE, STEVE, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO HELP ME OUT HERE.

NETWORKS OF SUPPORT, 21ST CENTURY LEARNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

>> ALSO SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING.

>> SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING. WHAT WE SAW IN THAT YEAR WAS THOSE FOUR THEMES ROSE TO THE SURFACE.

WHEN WE DID IT FIVE YEARS LATER, SIMILAR THEMES BUT A LITTLE REARRANGED BUT STILL A CONTINUATION OF A LOT OF THAT.

REMEMBER, STEVE HAD PUT TOGETHER A GREAT GRAPHIC AT ONE POINT THAT WAS LIKE THE BRIDGE FROM ONE PLAN TO THE NEXT.

YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE TWO, AND REALLY THAT'S BUILDING ON THE FOUNDATION.

WHICH IS WHY I THINK WHEN WE LOOKED AT OUR VISION THIS PAST YEAR, THAT VISION HAS REALLY BECOME A REALITY IN A LOT OF WAYS AND I THINK IT'S THE WORK OF THE STRATEGIC PLANS.

ANYWAY, THAT WAS TWO DAYS, 40 PEOPLE SYNTHESIZING ALL THAT DATA, AND THEN ONCE THOSE MAJOR THEMES WERE IDENTIFIED, THEN WORK GROUPS WERE ESTABLISHED AROUND EACH OF THOSE.

THOSE WERE PREDOMINANTLY ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS WITH A LITTLE BIT OF PARENT REPRESENTATION AS WELL, AND THEY JUST MET ON THEIR OWN.

WE GAVE THEM A DEADLINE, GAVE THEM A TEMPLATE, WE'VE MET A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEY CAME BACK WITH WHAT ARE THE ACTUAL STEPS AND WHAT WE'RE GOING TO TAKE TO NOW DELIVER ON THIS DIRECTION THAT WE'VE SET.

WHEN WE DID IT LAST TIME, THE FIRST TIME,

[01:45:01]

I THINK IT WAS DONE WITH A FIVE-YEAR HORIZON IN MIND AND A LIST OF ALL THE THINGS THAT WOULD BE ADDED.

I WILL BE SHARING THAT WITH YOU ALL, ESPECIALLY AS WE GET INTO THE OCTOBER WORK SESSION, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THAT IN A WHILE.

THIS LAST TIME WHEN WE DID IT, WE WERE COACHED TO THINK MORE OF AN 18-MONTH TIME HORIZON.

THE THINKING BEING, YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING OVER THE FIVE YEARS, BUT IF YOU PLAN ON THE 18 MONTHS IT GIVES YOU SOME ABILITY TO PIVOT AND ADJUST.

IF YOU GET DOWN TO PATH EITHER YOU THINK MAYBE IT'S NOT QUITE RIGHT, OR MAYBE CONDITIONS CHANGED LIKE, OH SAY, FOR A PANDEMIC, THINGS LIKE THAT.

BUT IT'S THINKING, WHAT'S THE NEXT 16 MONTHS OF OUR WORK, AND THEN WE HAD TO REVISIT IT MULTIPLE TIMES.

DIFFERENT APPROACHES. BUT THAT'S HOW THINGS CAME TO BE.

THAT'S WHY I WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU, BUT THEN NOW REALLY TO THINK OR TO HEAR FROM YOU WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT AS WE START TO PUT TOGETHER AN RFP.

THERE'S LOTS OF STRATEGIC PLANNING APPROACHES.

WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE AS WE START TO INCLUDE IT IN THERE. NICE QUESTION.

>>ONE QUESTION THAT I HAD AND IS NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO WHAT YOU WERE ASKING, BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT LIKE AN 18-MONTH GOAL I WOULD SAY, HOW DID YOU GUYS MANAGE THAT FROM A BUDGET PERSPECTIVE, IF THE PLAN IS NOT GOING TO BE THROUGH THE PROCESS UNTIL LATE IN THE YEAR AFTER THE BUDGET, BUT YOU WANT TO START IMPLEMENTING THINGS IN THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR, DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU GUYS ADDRESSED THAT? DO YOU HAVE A CONTINGENCY IN THE BUDGET FOR STRATEGIC PLAN?

>> OH, NO.

>> FOCUSED ITEMS, OR?

>> NO, ACTUALLY WE DIDN'T.

AGAIN, I'M GOING TO TURN TO STEVE TO FEEL FREE TO JUMP IN ON ANY OF THIS.

>> I KNOW JIM SOUND HERE, SO IT'S A LITTLE UNFAIR TO YOU.

>> WHEN I LOOK BACK AT THE PRIOR PLAN THERE WAS A LOT MORE SPECIFIC PROGRAMMATIC THINGS LIKE BUILDING THE LAST PROGRAM, IB PROGRAM AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

THERE WAS SOME REALLY SPECIFIC PROGRAMMATIC BUILDS THAT WOULD NECESSITATE BUDGETARY GROWTH.

THE SECOND PLAN THIS PAST TIME AROUND, I THINK IT WAS A LITTLE BIT MORE, I WOULD CALL IT PHILOSOPHICAL.

IT WAS ASPIRATIONAL VISION, IT DIDN'T LAY OUT SPECIFICALLY, WE'RE GOING TO HIRE A SOCIAL WORKER FOR EVERY GRADE LEVEL. IT DID.

IT JUST SAID THAT WE WERE GOING TO WORK TO SUPPORT THE NEEDS OF THE WHOLE CHILD AND HAD SOME PROCESSES, I GUESS I WOULD SAY MORE IN THERE, WHICH THEN LEAD US TO THINGS LIKE THE ADDITION OF SOCIAL WORKERS, THE ADDITION OF INTERVENTIONISTS AS WE WANTED TO STRENGTHEN INTERVENTION SUPPORTS DOWN FROM WHERE WE WERE IN ELEMENTARY DOWN.

I GUESS I WOULD SAY IT WASN'T AS CONCRETE IN THAT WAY.

EACH YEAR AS THE YEAR WHEN AROUND, WE WERE TALKING PROGRAMMATICALLY INTERNALLY.

WE START THOSE PROGRAMMATIC CONVERSATIONS PRETTY MUCH LIKE NOW.

BY NOVEMBER, THE AUTHENTIC LEARNING COMMITTEE IS GOING TO BE HONING IN ON ANY NEW COURSES, PROGRAM CHANGES, THINGS LIKE THAT, WHICH WOULD THEN LEAD US TO POTENTIAL STAFFING NEEDS, RESOURCE NEEDS, WHICH WE WOULD THEN BUILT INTO THE BUDGET.

BY THE TIME WE GET TO STARTING TO CONSTRUCT, WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE FORESEEING IN THE NEXT YEAR.

>> I THINK THAT BASED MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE TWO DIFFERENT PLANS.

I THINK CHARLES CORRECT IN THIS, IT'S JUST ASSESSING IF THERE WERE MORE PROGRAMMATIC AND IT SEEMED LIKE PROGRAMMATIC LED TO SOME PEOPLE, PERSONNEL ADDITIONS IN THE FIRST STRATEGIC PLAN.

WHAT, IS IT 2014, 2000 [OVERLAPPING]

>> '19.

>> '19, RIGHT. IT WAS OUTLINED IN BULLETS, IF YOU JUST LOOK BACK IN SOME OF OUR TIMELINES AND THE HISTORY DOCUMENTS NOW.

IT LAID OUT SOME WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR WE'RE FOCUSING ON AND THEN OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

>> IN THE THINGS LIKE ONE-TO-ONE TECHNOLOGY.

MANDARIN, THAT WAS IN THERE.

>> EXACTLY. EVEN THERE WAS A LOT OF STEM SCIENCE, COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSEWORK BACK THEN.

THAT GREW OUT OF THAT STRATEGIC PLAN AS WELL.

THEN THERE ARE SOME GLARING THINGS, LIKE WE DIDN'T HAVE A PSYCHOLOGIST IN EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

SOME THEY'RE JUST DEFINITELY TIED TO PERSONNEL PIECES TO IT.

THE SECOND PLANING THAT I'VE BEEN INVOLVED WITH IT WAS MORE, I THINK, PHILOSOPHICAL BUT IT LED TO SOME CHANGES.

IT WOULD LEAD TO MAYBE SOME PERSONNEL CHANGES AS WELL.

BUT I THINK IT WAS, BASED MY FIRST FIVE- YEARS WAS MUCH MORE OF LIKE, WE DON'T HAVE THIS PROGRAM, WHO'S TEACHING MANDARIN RIGHT NOW?

>> YEAH, I REMEMBER, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE HISTORICAL HEADCOUNT,

[01:50:02]

YOU LOOK AT THE CHART, I'VE DISTRICT HEADCOUNT OVER TIME.

THE FIRST STRATEGIC PLAN ON [OVERLAPPING] WHAT DID YOU SAY IT WAS?

>> 14-19.

>> THAT'S LIKE A PRETTY ABRUPT SPIKE IN HEADCOUNT.

IN THE SECOND STRATEGIC PLAN ONE, WHICH IS NEARLY UP, THERE WAS OVER THE COURSE OF THE THREE OR FOUR YEARS.

THERE HAS BEEN A GRADUAL GROWTH AND HAD HIM, I GUESS, TO SUPPORT THE THINGS THAT ARE MORE PHILOSOPHICAL, BUT IT'S THERE NONETHELESS.

IT WASN'T JUST THIS DRAMATIC HOCKEY STICKS. [OVERLAPPING]

>> IT WAS STUFF, BUT I MADE YOU THINK RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS, THREE CLASS TEACHERS AND A MANDARIN TUTOR.

I'M JUST THINKING THE FIRST FEW YEARS I WAS HERE.

>> ANYTHING WITH IB, I KNOW MORE LANGUAGE WAS ADDED TO SIXTH GRADE.

>> CORRECT. WE DIDN'T HAVE LANGUAGES IN SIXTH GRADE FOR A YEAR, COMPLIMENTARY PROGRAM.

THAT WAS A DIFFERENCE.

BUT AGAIN, THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO APPROACH IT.

I JUST REMEMBER THERE WERE THE SURVEYS.

WHEN I FELL INTO THE POSITION IT WAS LIKE, WHOA, WE HAVE THE SURVEYS IN THE DISTRICT AND LOT OF FEEDBACK.

IT DEFINITELY IT WASN'T A VACUUM EXPERIENCE, IT WAS SOMETHING THAT WHERE MANY PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY WANTED THESE EXPERIENCES AND THAT'S WHAT DROVE IT.

THAT WAS FASCINATING FOR ME.

I'VE ALSO BEEN INVOLVED IN STRATEGIC PLANNING WHERE I LIVED, AND THERE ARE JUST DIFFERENT WAYS TO DO IT.

I VALUE THE WAY IT HAS BEEN DONE HERE, BECAUSE I THINK THAT IT DID, IT WASN'T JUST NECESSARILY A SMALL COMMITTEE, IT DID TAKE A LOT OF INPUT FROM DIFFERENT PLACES, SO I KNOW THAT'S MY OPINION, BUT I'M SAYING THAT I'VE SEEN THAT IN DIFFERENT WAYS, SO I THINK THAT HAS BEEN GOOD.

BUT THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS TO ACTUALLY LOOK AT IT, AND THERE'S NO, LET'S SAY, CORRECT WAY YOU HAVE PROBABLY DO IT.

BUT I JUST KNOW THIS COMMUNITY THEY'D LIKE INPUT. THEN RIGHTFULLY SO.

>> I'D SAY SO TO YOUR QUESTION. CERTAINLY, WE COULD ALLOCATE SOME MONEY TOWARDS SOMETHING.

I THINK THIS IS GOING TO SOUND, I DON'T MEAN THIS TO SOUND NEGATIVE.

IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DO THINGS IN PUBLIC EDUCATION.

EVEN LET'S SAY WE WERE GOING TO CREATE A BASKET WEAVING STRAND IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.

I'M JUST MAKING SOMETHING ABSURD UP OBVIOUSLY, BUT THERE WOULD HAVE TO BE A LOT OF PLANNING, THERE WOULD HAVE TO BE LOOKING AT WHAT ARE THE CURRICULAR NEEDS, WHAT ARE THE PROGRAMMATIC NEEDS, WHAT ARE THE CERTIFICATION NEEDS, WHERE WOULD THIS BUILDING, AND WOULD IT BE SOMETHING WE PHASE IN, WOULD IT BE SOMETHING WE SEND SOMEONE TO TRAIN? SO THE A LOT THAT DID A LOT OF LEAD TIME TO DOING ANYTHING NEW.

I THINK THAT'S ANOTHER PIECE OF, EVEN THOUGH WE'RE STRATEGIC PLANNING, WE'RE COMING TO THE PLAN IN THE SPRING OF THIS YEAR.

THE CHANCES OF IMPLEMENTING SOMETHING MAJOR NEW AND COSTLY IN SEPTEMBER BASED ON JUNE STRATEGIC PLANNING THEY'RE RELATIVELY. [OVERLAPPING]

>> DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE DESIGNED SO THAT THE EXECUTION THAT ACTUALLY BEGINS IN '25, '26?

>> IF IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO INVOLVE I'D SAY SOMETHING REALLY NEW, YEAH.

I THINK THAT'S REALISTIC.

>> I AGREE.

>> BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED TO BE PREPARED.

THEY NEED TIME TO PLAN, TIME TO LEARN, TIME TO BE TRAINED.

>> BUILD CAPACITY.

>> EXACTLY.

>> I DON'T WANT. [OVERLAPPING]

>> SORRY.

>> NO, PLEASE.

>> DO YOU THINK THAT MEANS FOR NEXT TIME WOULD IT MAKE SENSE TO DO IT A YEAR BEFORE THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN ENDED SO YOU COULD START IMPLEMENTING, IT'S A LITTLE WEIRD, BUT IF YOU WERE GOING TO TRY AND DO IT IN A WAY, OTHERWISE YOU'RE REALLY DOING LIKE A FOUR-YEAR PLAN.

>> A FIVE-YEAR PLAN IF YOU START REPLAYING ON YOUR FORM.

>> I DON'T KNOW.

>> NO REASON WHY WE COULDN'T. [LAUGHTER]

>> OBVIOUSLY A LONG WAY OFF NOW.

>> I GUESS EVERYONE ON THE BOARD IS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS BUT YOU'VE DONE IT ONCE, YOU'VE DONE IT TWICE SO I GUESS I'D LIKE TO ANSWER QUESTION WITH A QUESTION BUT TOP OF MIND ARE THERE ANY THINGS THAT YOU THINK WORKED PARTICULARLY WELL THE LAST TIME WE WENT THROUGH THIS EXERCISE OR OPTIMIZATION CHANGE YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE DOING IT AGAIN? ANY LEARNINGS FROM YOUR SIDE OF THE TABLE?

>> I THINK THE BROAD INVOLVEMENT REALLY WAS IMPORTANT.

I KNOW THAT PELHAM COMMUNITY APPRECIATES INPUT CHANCE TO HAVE A VOICE AND TO HEAR THEIR VOICE IN IT SO I THINK THAT THE SURVEYS, I THINK WERE REALLY HELPFUL TO GET A REALLY BROAD SWATH OF INPUT.

BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE CAN TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO NOT ONLY WORK IN LIFE TO COME SPEND IN SCHOOL.

I THINK THAT WAS HELPFUL, I DO THINK HAVING

[01:55:03]

SOME STAKEHOLDER WORK GROUPS LIKE THAT WAS ALSO HELPFUL BECAUSE YOU COULD HEAR FROM PEOPLE'S PERSPECTIVES.

PARENTS WOULD COME AND THEY WOULD SEE DATA SAYING ONE THING AND THE EDUCATORS WOULD SEE IT THE OTHER WAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WE'D ALL BE LIKE, OH MY GOSH, I NEVER THOUGHT OF IT THAT WAY SO WE YOU BUILT A LOT OF UNDERSTANDING AND A LOT OF CONSENSUS THROUGH THAT PROCESS, AND I THINK THAT WAS HELPFUL.

THE THING THAT I LOOK BACK AND WHAT I WOULD ADD THIS TIME AROUND I THINK, AND ESPECIALLY AFTER HAVING SPENT SO MUCH TIME LOOKING AT THE VISION LAST YEAR, I WOULD MAYBE ASK TO SPEND SOME TIME ON MAYBE LOOKING AT VISION MISSION VALUES BECAUSE WE DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE THAT I CAN FIND A DEFINED MISSION.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIND VALUES, WE'VE GOT THE VISION WHICH IS EXCELLENT BUT WE DISCOVERED IT FROM 20 YEARS AGO.

I THINK THERE MIGHT BE SOME VALUE AND MAYBE ADDING THOSE PIECES AND I KNOW SOMETIMES THOSE ARE JUST A BINDER ON THE SHELF OR A POSTER ON THE WALL BUT I THINK THEY CAN ALSO BE VERY IMPORTANT AND VERY FOCUSING SO THAT'S I THINK WHAT I WOULD ADD.

>> JUST ONE OTHER QUESTION, SORRY [INAUDIBLE].

>> OF COURSE.

>> THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A BIG PRODUCTION.

IS THEIR MONEY IN THE BUDGET FOR THIRD-PARTIES TO HELP MANAGE?

>> THERE'S SOME.

>> THERE IS, BECAUSE DOING THE FOCUS GROUPS, INGESTING ALL THE DATA, SYNTHESIZING THE DATA THAT SOMETHING TELLS ME YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO DO THAT.

>> I'M GLAD YOU MENTIONED, THERE WAS ALSO SOME DATA ANALYSIS DONE BY THE CONSULTANTS AS WELL ON ACADEMICS OR ACADEMIC OUTCOMES PARTICIPATION IN ADVANCED COURSEWORK THINGS LIKE THAT.

THERE IS MONEY IN THE BUDGET I PUT IT WITHIN MY CONTRACTUAL LINES, I PUT IN THE AMOUNT THAT WAS ABOUT WHERE WE SPEND PRIOR YEARS.

>> ONE RELATED TO YOUR QUESTION.

DID YOU LIKE THE WAY THE WORKSHOPS WERE FACILITATED? THE ONE THING I NOTICED JUST IN OUR GOAL SETTING THAT'S THE ONE THING I'VE DONE TWICE ON THE BOARD.

THE DIFFERENCE WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEBODY FACILITATING WHO BROUGHT SOMETHING FOR US TO REACT TO.

>> JACKIE THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION BECAUSE I WAS ABOUT TO ASK THE SAME THING IF YOU NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WAS IT THE SAME CONSULTANT AND IF NOT WHAT WERE THE DIFFERENCES?

>> WELL, I'LL GIVE YOU MY THOUGHT, I WAS THERE ONCE BUT STEVE WAS THERE TWICE.

IT WAS THE SAME CONSULTANT BOTH TIMES WITH JUDY WILSON WHO I THINK MANY OF YOU HAVE MET, WHAT ARE THE MOST WELL-RECEIVED CONSULTANTS WORKING WITH FACULTY AND STAFF AND PARENTS THAT I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED.

>> IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, SHE WORKED IN BOTH PLANS.

THEY DON'T LOOK THE SAME.

>> RIGHT.

>> I WAS ON THE STRATEGIC PLAN BACK IN MY HOMETOWN DISTRICT, AND IT JUST DIDN'T LOOK CANDID WITH THEIR CONSULTANT.

IT WAS JUST SOMETHING THAT I WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH AS MUCH.

DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING IT. THE PLAINTIFFS WERE JUST DIFFERENT AND IT'S JUST INTERESTING THAT IT WAS JUDY SHEPARD.

>> I RECOMMENDED HER TO OUR NUMEROUS COLLEAGUES AND THEY CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE WORK THAT SHE'S DONE.

I'M SEEING TRACY NOD HER HEAD OVER THERE.

>> IN MY PREVIOUS DISTRICT DEVELOPING THE STRATEGIC PLAN AND IN MY ALMOST 20 YEARS OF DOING THIS I'VE BEEN TO A LOT OF PDES AND IT WAS TWO OF THE MOST INTERESTING DAYS I'VE SPENT AS A PROFESSIONAL WORKING WITH HER AND INVOLVING A BROAD SPECTRUM OF STAKEHOLDER GROUPS AND GETTING A LOT OF INPUT AND COMMUNICATION AND THE WORK GROUPS THAT WE WERE INVOLVED IN.

AS SHE BROKE US UP, SHE INTERMINGLE THE STAKEHOLDER GROUPS AND HAD A STUDENT IN EVERY GROUP AND IT WAS JUST GREAT TO HEAR THE STUDENT'S VISION AS WELL AS WE WOULD TRY AND UNFOLD THE STRATEGIC PLAN SO IT WAS VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE.

>> FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH I THOUGHT THE OUTSIDERS WHO RAN OUR BOARD RETREAT WERE EXCELLENT SO MAYBE WE COULD CONSIDER THEM AS WELL AS POTENTIAL COLLABORATORS.

THE ONLY OTHER THING I WOULD SAY AS MY OPINION FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH IS I THINK THAT WHILE THE CONCEPTS OF THE CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN ARE ADMIRABLE AND AGREE WITH THEM, I THINK THERE IS A CERTAIN TYPE OF LANGUAGE THAT IS USED THAT GIVEN HOW IMPORTANT THAT IS TO BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY PARTICULARLY THOSE FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS NOT THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE PHRASES LIKE CULTURAL COMPETENCY, I THINK HAVE A CERTAIN TEXTURE THAT YOU PUT INTO GOOGLE TRANSLATE YOU'RE NOT QUITE SURE WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO GET BACK.

>> IT'S A VERY TECHNICAL TERM

[02:00:02]

THAT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE IN PLAIN LANGUAGE TO PEOPLE.

>> I DO REMEMBER IN THE PRIOR PLAN I THINK JOHN BRYCE WAS ON THE BOARD AT THAT POINT IN TIME AND HE HATED EDUCATIONAL JARGON [LAUGHTER] ANYTHING THAT CAN BE SIMPLY EXPLAINED.

THAT'S A FAIR POINT. AGAIN I THINK TO STEVE'S POINT, IT'S JUDY OR WHOEVER IT IS THE DISTRICT CAN SHAPE THE PLAN, IT'S NOT THE CONSULTANT'S PLAN, IT'S THE DISTRICT'S PLAN.

I THINK WE CAN BE ATTUNED TO THOSE KINDS OF THINGS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S PLAIN LANGUAGE, LAY PERSON, UNDERSTANDABLE AND EASILY APPROACHABLE BUT VISIONARY AND IMPORTANT.

>> AGREED.

>> I THINK GIVEN THE FACT THAT WE ARE PLANNING ON INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY, WE ARE VERY DIFFERENT TODAY THAN WE WERE FIVE YEARS AGO JUST THINK ABOUT COVID AND NOW IN OUR SCHOOLS WE HAVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER AT A HIGHER RATE THAN WE DID IN THE PAST.

I THINK THAT WILL COME OUT AND THE TYPE OF LANGUAGE WE USE AND WHAT WORK AS A COMMUNITY CAN COME TOGETHER AND DECIDE WHAT IS THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS IN THE SCHOOLS.

>> ARE THEIR MAJOR CATEGORIES OR INITIATIVES YOU'RE EVEN THINKING ABOUT NOW THAT WOULD INFLUENCE EVEN THE KIND OF CONSULTANT WE'D WANT TO BRING IN WITH CERTAIN EXPERTISE?

>> NOT SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I GUESS MY EXPERIENCE WITH IT HERE AND OTHER DISTRICTS REALLY IS IT'S THEY'RE MORE FACILITATING THE DISCUSSION AND BRINGING THE GROUP TO A CONSENSUS AROUND WHAT'S VALUED AND WHERE DO PEOPLE WANT TO SEE THINGS MOVING.

>> THEN JUST IN GENERAL. [OVERLAPPING]

>> HAVING A CONSULTANT WHO CAN FACILITATE AS OPPOSED TO COMING AS AN EXPERT ON ANYTHING.

HELP US TO LEAN WHERE WE WANT TO GO INSTEAD OF THEY'RE LEADING US TO A PARTICULAR END WILL BE MY ONLY.

>> ERIC, JUST SO INDEPENDENT OF THE CONSULTANT, ARE THERE ANY AREAS THAT YOU ARE ALREADY LIKE WOW, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN SCHOOLS OR VALUES? ARE THERE THINGS THAT YOU'RE ALREADY CHOMPING AT THE BIT ON TO SAY, WE REALLY WANT TO PUT OUR THUMB ON THE SCALE.

>> NOT FULLY FORMED THOUGHTS TO SHARE YET.

I THINK THERE'S AREAS TO GROW. NOT YET.

I'D HOPE TO COME BACK TO THIS TOPIC A COUPLE OF TIMES THROUGHOUT THE FALL SO IT'S CERTAINLY SOMETHING THAT I CAN BE THINKING ABOUT AND BE MORE READY TO SHARE IN THE FUTURE.

>> YEAH, WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT TOO.

>> I THINK THERE'LL BE SOMETHING FOR ALL OF US TO THINK ABOUT.

>> WHAT WOULD THE TIMELINE BE THEN? SHOULD THIS START?

>> THE WAY WE'VE DONE IT IN THE PAST AND I GUESS I'M JUST TRYING TO THINK OF ALL THE DIFFERENT TASKS THAT WE HAVE IN FRONT OF US AND MAKING SURE NOT TO PILE TOO MUCH ON ONE OF THE THING ON THE OTHER.

I BELIEVE WE LAUNCHED SURVEYS SOMEWHERE AROUND DECEMBER/JANUARY.

I COULD WORK WITH ALEX AND WE CAN FIND OUT EXACTLY WHEN WE LAUNCHED THEM LAST YEAR. JANUARY, FEBRUARY? [OVERLAPPING] I THINK IT WAS SURVEYS FIRST BECAUSE IT WAS QUICK AND EASY WE CAN GET THOSE LAUNCHED OUT AND THEN I BELIEVE FOCUS GROUPS WERE NEXT, I'M GOING TO GUESS SOMEWHERE AROUND JANUARY, AND THEN THE LARGE WORK-GROUP TO SYNTHESIZE THE DATA WAS PROBABLY, LET'S SAY FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT JANUARY, PART OF FEBRUARY.

THEN THE WORK GROUPS WERE THEN DIVIDED UP WITH A DEADLINE OF MAY.

>> BUT THE RFP FOR THE CONSULTANT WOULD BE-

>> THAT WOULD HAVE TO GO OUT THIS FALL.

>> A MONTH FROM NOW.

>> YEAH. VERY SHORTLY.

>> RIGHT.

>> IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A HUGE TIMELINE TURNAROUND.

I'M SURE WE'RE GOING TO GET A WIDE ARRAY OF APPLICATIONS, I THINK LAST TIME I DID AN RFP FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING.

WE GOT ONE BACK THAT WAS $150,000 AND THEN ONES THAT WERE LIKE 20,000 AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF SERVICES AND SUCH.

SOME I THINK WERE NOT LIKE 100,000 STUDENTS IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT SIZE WHERE YOU NEED THAT LEVEL BUT YOU DO CERTAINLY WANT A LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATED FACILITATION.

>> YEAH, FOR SURE.

>> WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE PLANNING FOR IT I'D WANT TO MAKE SURE THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM IS GETTING THE WORD OUT FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE SURVEY SO THAT THEY'RE SIMILAR TO LAST TIME, THERE WAS REALLY ROBUST PARTICIPATION.

>> TO BE HONEST, THAT'S ANOTHER REASON WHY I'M THINKING DECEMBER-JANUARY BECAUSE,

[02:05:04]

IF WE LAUNCH THE CLIMATE SURVEY IN OCTOBER, WE DON'T WANT TO OVERSATURATE THE SURVEYS.

>> SURVEYS, YEAH.

>> I'M THINKING IF OCTOBER THEN MAYBE DECEMBER, A TWO-MONTH GAP BETWEEN MAYBE PUSHING TO JANUARY SO THAT WE DON'T GET THE FATIGUE.

>> YOU MENTIONED THE SURVEYS WERE SIMILAR BETWEEN 2014 AND THIS ONE.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE EXPANSIVE ENOUGH TO BRING NEW IDEAS IN.

I REALIZED WE WILL BE BUILDING ON PREVIOUS PLANS BUT MAYBE THERE IS A DIFFERENT AREA [OVERLAPPING] THAT COMES TO LIGHT.

>> BECAUSE SOCIAL MEDIA WAS VERY DIFFERENT IN 2015.

>> YEAH, THAT'S FAIR BECAUSE [INAUDIBLE].

>> JUST FROM MY EXPERIENCE, IF I GO INTO A PATIENT'S ROOM AND SAY, HOW BAD IS YOUR CHEST PAIN VERSUS HOW ARE YOU FEELING TODAY? YOU GET A VERY DIFFERENT ANSWER.

SOME OF THE SURVEY QUESTIONS WERE A LITTLE BIT MORE CLOSED AND DIRECTED THAN THE OPEN-ENDED TYPE OF QUESTIONS.

THE WAY YOU FRAME ALL THE QUESTIONS, I'M SURE THE TOPICS AND FOCUS GROUP, ALL OF THOSE THINGS CAN REALLY CHANGE THE OUTCOME.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

>> WELL, THANK YOU FOR THAT FEEDBACK.

IF YOU THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE, LET ME KNOW.

LIKE I SAID, I'LL COME BACK TO THIS AGAIN IN ANOTHER MEETING AS WE START TO PUT THE RFP TOGETHER.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THAT IS IT FOR ME.

[LAUGHTER] SORRY ABOUT THAT.

HOPEFULLY WORTHWHILE.

>> DOES ANYBODY NEED TO TAKE A BREAK OR HOW MUCH MORE DO WE THINK WE HAVE? JUST KEEP GOING?

>> TWO HOURS.

>> SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE ON AUTHENTIC LEARNING.

[3.2 Assistant Superintendent's Update on Authentic Learning]

>> DR. CHAMP HAS UPDATED YOU ON ALMOST EVERY SINGLE THING I'VE BEEN UP TO.

[LAUGHTER] WHICH IS A LOT. FAIR. THANK YOU.

I APPRECIATE THAT. [LAUGHTER] WE DO HAVE A MEETING SCHEDULED TO PLAN THE REST OF THE YEAR'S PD WITH BRANCHING LINES ON SEPTEMBER 21ST.

OUR TECHNOLOGY TEAM IS GOING TO BE MEETING WITH DATABASE TOMORROW FOR THE FIRST ROUND OF THEIR TRAINING SO THAT THEY CAN BUILD OUTSIDE OF THE CANNED REPORTS THAT WE GET FROM DATABASE.

DR. CALLAGHAN SHARED WITH YOU ALL THAT'S HAPPENING WITH CHASING SPACE.

THE CHILDREN HAVE ARRIVED, THEY FINISHED.

TODAY WOULD BE THURSDAY, FRIDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, DAY 5 OF SCHOOL SO WE'RE FULL WEEK IN.

AS I SAID EARLIER, WE ANTICIPATE DROP-IN TUTORING TO BEGIN WITHIN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS, I'D SAY.

ONCE WE HAVE ENOUGH STAFF READY TO GO AND QUITE HONESTLY, ENOUGH CURRICULUM TAUGHT TO PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR A NEED FOR HELP IN THAT WAY.

YOU LITERALLY GAVE EVERYTHING.

[LAUGHTER] THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU AND THANK YOU FOR BREVITY. [LAUGHTER]

>> MY PLEASURE.

>> ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE ON THE WHOLE CHILD.

[3.3 Assistant Superintendent's Update on The Whole Child]

>> THANK YOU. I'LL TRY TO BE BRIEF AS WELL.

JUST LIKE THE FACILITIES, THERE'S SO MUCH WORK THAT GOES INTO PREPARING, GETTING READY FOR OUR BUILDINGS.

THE SAME THING HAPPENS WITH THE TEACHERS AND THE STAFF AND A LOT GOES ON IN SUPERINTENDENT CONFERENCE DAYS.

THEY JUST WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT IN MY REPORT.

WE DID A LOT OF PD IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

WE HAD OUR PSYCHOLOGISTS, OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, AND OUR SERVICE PROVIDERS ATTEND PD SESSION WITH OUR CONSULTING NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST GETTING READY FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR.

WE DO A LOT OF EVALUATIONS.

WE HAD A LOT OF INDEPENDENT REPORTS.

MAKING SURE THAT OUR STAFF WAS READY FOR THE WORK THAT HAS TO BE DONE THIS YEAR IN RELATION TO THAT.

EVEN OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION MONITORS, THEY ENGAGE IN OUR TRAINING WITH OUR DISTRICT CONSULTANT BCBA, OR BEHAVIORIST, AND PREPARES THEM TO WORK WITH THE STUDENTS.

JUST BASICALLY GIVING THEM AN OVERVIEW ON DISABILITY AND STUDENT BEHAVIORS AND THINGS THEY SHOULD ANTICIPATE WITH THE STUDENTS THAT THEY WORK WITH.

I DID WANT TO MENTION ONE THING THAT DR.

CHAMP DID MENTION ON THE FACILITIES BUT HE ALSO DID AT THE BOARD ON THE WALK THROUGH OUR NEW FOR HIGH SCHOOL ROOM WHICH WAS A LONG TIME IN THE MAKING.

THAT WAS ACTUALLY THE VISION OF SUSAN LOCKHART WHO WAS AN INTERIM ME FIVE YEARS AGO OR SO, DR.

CHAMP. SHE'S ACTUALLY SINCE PASSED AWAY.

SHE PASSED AWAY LAST YEAR.

[02:10:02]

I DID ACTUALLY FIND HER DAUGHTER ON FACEBOOK AND SHARED WITH HER THAT HER MOM'S VISION CAME TO BEING WHICH WAS REALLY SPECIAL FOR HER.

BUT THE FLL CLASSROOM IN THE HIGH SCHOOL IS A PHENOMENON NEW SPACE THAT WHEN I WALKED IN THERE DAY 1 THE KIDS WERE JUST THRILLED AND COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY AND PROUD TO SHOW ME AROUND AND SHOW ME WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE DOING IN THEIR NEW SPACES.

THAT WAS REALLY SPECIAL AND IT WAS A GREAT PART OF COMBINATION OF THAT BOND BARK AS WELL.

I'M ALSO ON THE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING FRONT.

ON SUPERINTENDENT CONFERENCE DAY, WE HAD A LARGE GROUP OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WHO ENGAGED IN OUR FIRST RESPONSIVE CLASSROOM TRAINING WITH EARL HUNTER ON SUSTAINING MOMENTUM.

THE TEACHERS WALKED AWAY SO INVIGORATED AND EXCITED.

IT'S SO HARD TO PULL IT EVERYONE'S TIME.

THEY WANT TO GET IN AND DO SOME OF THEIR OWN WORK AND SET THE ROOMS UP BUT EARL DID A GREAT JOB AS HE ALWAYS DOES.

GETTING THE TEACHERS THINKING ABOUT HOW TO USE RESPONSIVE CLASSROOM, THINK ABOUT WHAT THEIR FIRST WEEK IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE, WHAT THEIR FIRST MONTH IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE, AND WHAT THE WHOLE YEAR IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE IN TERMS OF THEIR CLASSROOM COMMUNITY.

ALSO, THE PSYCHOLOGISTS MET WITH OUR DBT CONSULTANT.

THOSE FIRST TWO DAYS WERE SO BUSY GETTING READY ALSO FOR THE START OF SCHOOL.

I MENTIONED AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING, I WON'T GO INTO IT.

OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT IS EXTREMELY BUSY AS THE START OF SCHOOL.

THEY ARE STILL DEALING WITH A LOT OF ADJUSTING OF SCHEDULES, DROP ADS, STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT THROUGH OCTOBER IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.

THIS NEXT WEEK, THE STAFF WILL BE PUSHING INTO THE SENIORS IN THEIR ENGLISH CLASSES TO TALK ABOUT THE COLLEGE PROCESS.

SENIOR COLLEGE NIGHT IS SEPTEMBER 19TH.

OUR COLLEGE VISITS STARTED THIS WEEK.

I MENTIONED THEY'VE SET UP ALREADY 77 VISITS THROUGH THE FALL, SO THIS WEEK AND NEXT WE'VE GOT SYRACUSE, BOSTON COLLEGE VERSUS SKIDMORE, OHIO STATE.

THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE VISITING.

THE PSETS WILL BE OCTOBER 11TH.

THERE'S A COMMUNICATION COMING OUT TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS SHORTLY ABOUT SIGNING UP IN THE PROCESS.

LOOK OUT FOR THAT.

THEN JUST QUICKLY IN THE AREA OF NURSING, WE DID HAVE A NURSE THAT RESIGNED AT HUTCHINSON RIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED.

WE HAD NURSE INTERVIEWS TODAY BUT LUCKILY WE HAVE OUR NURSE COORDINATOR ON STAFF WHO IS STEPPING IN AND PICKING UP AND HELPING US GET HUTCH OFF TO A GOOD START.

WE'RE NOT SKIPPING A BEAT THERE SO. THAT'S IT FOR ME.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. NEXT IS

[3.4 Executive Director's Update on Human Resources and Learning]

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS UPDATE ON HUMAN RESOURCES AND LEARNING THAT'S A MOUTHFUL, IS IT.

>> IT JUST BRIEFLY AGAIN SO THERE'S ALWAYS LEARNING THAT GOES ON, BUT THE LEADERSHIP TEAM AND WE'D LIKE TO FIND A TEXT THAT WE WANT TO READ TOGETHER AND LEARN ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND THERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT RENEE BROWN'S DARE TO LEAD SO WE CHOSE THAT AS HER BOOK.

WE'LL BE USING THAT AS OUR LITTLE BOOK STUDY WHEN WE MEET ONCE A MONTH AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO LEARNING AND LEADING WITH OUR ADMINISTRATIVE PROOF OF ON THAT.

I'LL BE MEETING WITH A GROUP ADMINISTRATORS WHO WANTED TO REFRAME OUR NEW TEACHER MEETINGS THIS YEAR SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO DISCUSSING THE PURPOSE AND THEN HOW WE'RE GOING TO ACTUALLY ACTUALIZE THOSE LEARNING EXPERIENCES WITH OUR NEW TEACHERS AND I THINK IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT SET OF EYES THAT WE HAVEN'T HAD AS MUCH INVOLVED WITH NEW TEACHER MEETINGS.

WE LOOK UP VOTING, GETTING THAT TOGETHER.

YOU'LL ALSO SEE ON THE AGENDA THIS EVENING FOR OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS, WE HAVE SOMETHING THAT'S CALLED THE ANNUAL APPOINTMENTS.

STIPEND IN POSITIONS WHICH ARE COLLECTIVELY BARGAINED WITH THE TEACHERS UNION.

THEY RUN THE GAMUT FROM DIFFERENT CURRICULUM POSITION, STACK DEVELOPER, LEAD TEACHER POSITIONS, ACADEMIC SERVICE CLUB ADVISORS, DRAMA ADVISORS, PUBLICATIONS, STUDENT GOVERNMENT ADVISERS, DIFFERENT TYPES OF CURRICULUM COACHES SO THAT HAPPENS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS.

WE MAY HAVE TO FILL THOSE WHICH ARE STILL VACANT UPCOMING BOARD MEMBERS WITH AN UPCOMING BOARD MEETINGS.

BUT WE WANT TO THANK THE TEACHERS FOR REALLY CONTRIBUTING THEIR TIME TO THE KIDS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S A COMPREHENSIVE EXPERIENCES THAT THEY ENJOY.

BUT YOU'LL SEE THAT ON THIS AGENDA.

>> THANK YOU.

>> THEN WE'RE NOT GOING TO DO.

>> TRAPPERS AND MOST OF IT THERE'S JUST A COUPLE OF IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ON THE BUSINESS PORTION, I'LL DO MY BEST TO HANDLE THIS.

>> I GUESS I WOULD SUGGEST WE DO OF 5.1 THROUGH 5.7 AS A CONSENT AGENDA AS WELL,

[5. Financial Reports and Motions]

[02:15:02]

WOULD ACCEPT A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE ITEMS SO MOVED SECOND AND ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?

>> IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU THINK JIM?

>> JIM WILL PROBABLY COMMENT ON THE LAST TWO SO YOU MAY REMEMBER PAID MENTIONED IN LAST TIME THE ADJUSTED BASED PROPORTIONS.

THIS IS AN ANNUAL VOTE WITH THE BOARD HAS TO TAKE TO DETERMINE WHICH ARE THE BASE PROPORTIONS TO USE FOR TAXES IN GENERAL, WE'VE RECOMMENDED IN THE BOARD HAS SELECTED THAT WHICH IS MORE FAVORABLE TO THE HOMESTEAD TAXPAYER AND THAT WOULD BE IN THIS CASE, THE 2022 ASSESSABLE BASE PROPORTIONS WITH 82.239051% GOING TO THE HOMESTEAD, AS OPPOSED TO THE 2023 VERSION WHICH WAS SLIGHTLY HIGHER.

>> DR. CHEN?

>> YES.

>> I JUST NOTICE IF WE COULD JUST BRIEFLY TOUCH ON THE CULTURE COACH POSITIONS FOR EVERY SCHOOL THAT WE HAVE.

>> I'M SURE.

>> VOLUNTEERS FOR THEM.

>> YES, ABSOLUTELY.

IF YOU DON'T MIND, LET ME DO THE 5.7 REAL QUICK.

WE'LL DO THAT MOTION AND THEN HAPPY TO EAT WHEN WE GET TO PERSONNEL, I WILL ABSOLUTELY DO THAT.

THE 5.7 IS THE FINAL BILL FROM BOTH CEASE FROM LAST YEAR IN ITS SIMPLEST FORM.

JIM AND I COMPARED WHAT DID WE BUDGET COMPARED TO WHAT THIS ACTUALLY WOUND UP BEING AT THE END OF THE DAY, THIS WAS ABOUT $150,000 HIGHER OVERALL [NOISE] FROM WHAT WAS BUDGETED TO WHAT WAS ACTUALLY FOR BOTH THESE CHARGES FROM LAST YEAR, WHICH COULD BE FOR ANY VARIETY OF THINGS.

IT COULD BE AS SIMPLE AS, ONE OR TWO SPECIAL EDUCATION PLACEMENTS THAT LONGER BEING DIFFERENT THAN YOU ANTICIPATED OR DIFFERENT SERVICES THAT WERE ADDED AFTER THE FACT.

GIVEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT $5,000,000 BILL, $150,000 IS NOT TOO FAR OFF, THOSE ARE THE TWO BIGGEST PIECES.

>> I'M GOING TO HAVE TO SIGN THIS [LAUGHTER].

>> IT'S FUN TO SIGN THE BIG ONES.

[LAUGHTER]

>> THOSE ARE THE ONLY TWO PIECES I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THERE.

>> I'M FINE MOVE FORWARD.

BUT GIVEN THE 5.6 IS THE TAX BASE AND THE SECOND IS, DO YOU WANT TO VOTE ON THROUGH 5.5 AND WAIT FOR THE FINAL TWO WITH JIM.

IS THERE IS THERE AN URGENCY ON THE LAST TWO ITEMS?

>> I DO NOT KNOW, I WOULD GUESS THERE'S SOME TIMELINESS TO NOTE TO THEM I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT TIMELINESS IS.

THIS IS REALLY STANDARD ANNUAL.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR QUESTION OR CONCERN YOU HAVE ON?

>> NO JUST THE SIZE OF THOSE TWO ITEMS, BUT I'M COMFORTABLE MOVING FORWARD.

>> I WILL ADD WITH THE BOSS'S BILL THAT JIM'S OFFICE REACHED OUT TO GET CONFIRMATION FROM THE VARIOUS OFFICES INVOLVED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CHARGES WERE ACCURATE.

I FEEL CONFIDENT THAT THAT BILL IS ACCURATE.

>> THE ONE WITH THE HOMESTEAD, I GUESS THEY NEEDED BY TOWN BOARD MEETING FOR THE TIME.

>> OCTOBER 10.

>> WE VOTED ON THIS FORUM.

WE TALK ABOUT IT IN FINANCE COMMITTEE?

>> I BELIEVE SO.

>> LET ME DO I JUST READ [NOISE] JIM HAD GIVEN ME A LITTLE PARAGRAPH TO SHARE ON IT TOWN APPELLANT ASSESSOR HAS REQUESTED THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD SELECT THE ADJUSTED BASE PROPORTIONS FOR THE 24, 25 SCHOOL TAXES.

THE BOARD HAS THE OPTION TO SELECT THE 2022 OR 2023 FINAL ASSESSMENT ROLE.

IN THE PAST OF SCHOOL HAS SELECTED THE ROLE OF THE BOARD HAS SELECTED THE ROLE THAT HAS THE LEAST IMPACT ON THE HOMESTEAD PROPERTY OWNERS WHICH IS THE RESIDENTIAL HOMEOWNERS.

HE'S RECOMMENDING THAT THE BOARD ADOPT TO 2022 FINAL ASSESSMENT ROLE FOR THE 24, 25 SCHOOL YEAR TAXES.

>> BECAUSE IT'S LOWER.

>> BECAUSE IT'S LOWER AND MORE FAVORABLE TO THE HOMEOWNER.

[NOISE]

>> ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSE ANY ABSTENTIONS? NO, MOTION CARRIES.

>> I'M GOING TO PROPOSE THAT WE DO 6.1 THROUGH 6.4 AS

[6. Superintendent's Personnel Recommendations]

A CONSENT AGENDA AND WOULD ACCEPT A MOTION TO APPROVE THOSE ITEMS.

>> SO MOVED.

>> SECOND.

>> JUST WANTED TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR SURE AS I MENTIONED IN MY OPENING REPORT, WE'RE EXCITED TO BE APPOINTING SCHOOL CULTURE.

CULTURE IS FOR EVERY SCHOOL WE DID HAVE TEACHERS STEP FORWARD AT

[02:20:03]

EVERY SCHOOL SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND AGAIN, I KNOW THE FOLKS THAT HAVE STEPPED FORWARD AND I KNOW THAT THERE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT IS NEAR AND DEAR TO THEIR HEARTS.

I THINK THE APPROACH OF GETTING TO WORK ALONGSIDE THEIR PRINCIPLE, I THINK IS ONE THAT PEOPLE RESPONDED WELL TO SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THEM.

SEE WHAT COMES FROM IT. I DO APPRECIATE THEM AS I SAID, TAKING ON THIS EXTRA DUTY, IT'S GOING TO GIVE THEM A POSITION OF A LITTLE BIT OF AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME TEACHER LEADERSHIP AS THEY HELP TO WORK TO DEVELOP THEIR COLLEAGUES IN THIS AREA.

>> JUST LOOKING THROUGH YOU SEE SO MANY NAMES OF GREAT TEACHERS AND REALLY HAPPY TO HAVE PEOPLE STEPPING INTO LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, AS LEADING CLUBS AND DIFFERENT CURRICULAR AREAS.

>> THAT'S ONE THING THAT I THINK VERY TYPICAL OF PELHAM IS PEOPLE ARE NOT JUST HERE FOR THEIR CLASSROOM.

>> [OVERLAPPING]. WORKING WITH CHILDREN. IT'S GOOD TO SEE.

>> I FORGET IN WHAT CONTEXTS WE WERE TALKING ABOUT.

MAYBE WITH OUR APPELLANT TOGETHER.

KIDS REALLY LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH THEIR TEACHERS HERE OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM AS WELL AS INSIDE THE CLASSROOM AND I THINK IT'S MUTUAL AND THAT'S WHAT YOU SEE HERE.

>> USUALLY CLUBS, THE IDEAS ARE COMING FROM THE KIDS.

>> ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSED ANY ABSTENTIONS? NO, THE MOTION CARRIES.

THEN WE HAVE 7.1 MOTION TO APPROVE

[7.1 Motion to Approve Schedule D - Committee on Special Education (Confidential)]

SCHEDULED D. I WILL ACCEPT A MOTION TO APPROVE SCHEDULED D.

>> SECOND.

>> ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSED ABSTENTIONS? NO. I WOULD ACCEPT

[8. Approval of Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Educaton (CPSE) Members]

A MOTION TO DO A CONSENT AGENDA OF 8.1 THROUGH 8.3.

>> SO MOVED.

>> SECOND.

>> THESE RELATE TO THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW PART-TIME SPECIAL EDUCATION CHAIR THAT YOU IMPROVED ON THE PERSONNEL AGENDA SO THIS GIVES HER AUTHORITY THEN TO SERVE ON THE VARIOUS CSE, CBSE AND 504 COMMITTEES.

>> ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> ANY OPPOSED ABSTENTIONS? NO. ANY NEW BUSINESS? NO. THEN I WOULD ACCEPT A MOTION TO ADJOURN THE MEETING.

>> SO MOVED.

>> SECOND.

>> ALL IN FAVOR?

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> AYE.

>> NOBODY IS SUPPOSED ARE ABSTAIN.

[LAUGHTER]

>> [INAUDIBLE] [OVERLAPPING]
